Position Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer I to support the development and improvement of electrical power distribution products. This role focuses on mechanical design, product documentation, prototype development, and engineering support for new and existing equipment. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a collaborative environment and contributing to products from concept through production.
Mechanical Design
- Develop mechanical designs and engineering documentation for power distribution equipment.
- Support new product development and enhancements for equipment such as:
- Switchboards
- Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
- Power Panels
- Create detailed part and assembly drawings using CAD software.
- Design and release mechanical prototypes while supporting prototype fabrication and evaluation.
- Recommend and implement design improvements following prototype testing.
Engineering & Project Support
- Collaborate with engineering, production, supply chain, service, and other departments to deliver high-quality products.
- Participate in design reviews, verify design performance, and incorporate engineering feedback.
- Lead small engineering projects independently while managing schedules and project requirements.
- Support engineering change notices (ECNs), product customization, lifecycle management, and continuous product improvements.
- Ensure designs meet project objectives, manufacturing requirements, and customer expectations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 2+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
- 2+ years of experience using SolidWorks for mechanical design, including thermal and structural evaluation.
- Knowledge of power protection or power distribution equipment.
- Experience designing or supporting:
- Switchboards
- Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
- UL 891 switchboards
- UL 508 control panels
- Familiarity with UL and IEC electrical safety standards.
- Experience with PLM software.
- Knowledge of sheet metal design, detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Experience designing or supporting engineering test fixtures is a plus.
- Technical writing experience is beneficial.
- Strong mechanical design and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting project deadlines.
- Team-oriented approach with strong collaboration skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality engineering documentation.
