Mechanical Design Engineer – Automation & Process Integration

Job summary

MP Materials seeks a Design Engineer with a strong background in mechanical/chemical engineering to join our new Texas facility. You will engage across process, controls, and manufacturing teams to design automated workflows, deliver detailed specs, and lead project execution from concept through commissioning.

You will apply CAD/FEA tools, support vendor assessments, and uphold process safety and environmental standards while driving continuous improvements in uptime, safety, and quality.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in mechanical or chemical engineering or related field.
• At least 5 years of process design and automation experience in manufacturing.
• Knowledge in automation of industrial processes and materials handling.
• Experience in machine design and testing.
• Knowledge of statistical process control and designing control systems.
• Broad knowledge across multiple CAD tools.
• Excellent spatial visualization and reasoning for bespoke designs.
• Project management with hands-on project execution.
• Sound knowledge of Process Safety.
• Good understanding of human factors in manufacturing.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with process, controls, and manufacturing teams to create automated processes with integrated flow.
• Lead design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of projects from concept to operation.
• Deliver finished designs, drawings, and specs for supplier bidding and ensure vendor compliance.
• Lead Design Engineering technicians to complete tasks.
• Participate in design reviews, supplier evaluations, and compliance audits to industrial standards.
• Perform CAD, FEA, and durability simulations to select prototypes and support testing and commissioning.
• Research and implement automation systems, detailed design, component sourcing, and equipment deployment.
• Work with EHS to ensure world-class health, safety, and environmental compliance.
