Job summary

Sterling Engineering in Wood Dale, IL is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to take fabricated metal products from concept through production. This hands-on role requires designing parts and assemblies, creating production drawings, and maintaining Bills of Materials.

You will work closely with manufacturing to ensure designs are manufacturable, revise drawings based on feedback, and support prototype builds and new product development.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience designing fabricated metal products, sheet metal components, or mechanical assemblies.
• Strong experience creating production and assembly drawings.
• Experience developing and maintaining BOMs.
• Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
• Understanding of metal fabrication and manufacturing processes.
• Design with manufacturability and assembly in mind.
• Ability to work directly with manufacturing and production teams.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop custom fabricated metal products and assemblies.
• Create detailed production drawings, fabrication drawings, and assembly prints.
• Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Design parts and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
• Work with sheet metal and other fabricated metal components.
• Translate concepts and customer requirements into manufacturable designs.
• Work with manufacturing teams to ensure designs can be fabricated and assembled efficiently.
• Revise drawings based on production feedback and changes.
• Support prototype builds, testing, and new product development.
• Review designs for manufacturability, cost, material usage, and ease of assembly.
• Manage multiple design projects and engineering priorities.
• Support continuous improvement and value engineering initiatives.
