Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical and thermal design of power electronics modules using 3D solid modeling and simulation to meet performance targets and resolve issues.

You will design components for casting, extrusion, and injection molding; develop fixtures and packaging; validate with FEA/CFD; and work with internal teams to ensure manufacturability and compliance with safety standards. This role emphasizes innovation and collaboration.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education/experience.
Solid knowledge of MCAD and 3D solid modeling tools (SolidWorks, Creo/Pro-E, CATIA).
Experience with FEA/CFD and thermal analysis for power electronics packaging.
Familiarity with ANSI/ASME Y14.5M and GD&T principles.
Understanding of manufacturing processes for metal and plastic components.

Responsibilities

Own mechanical and thermal design of power electronics module using 3-D modeling and simulation to meet targets.
Design components for casting, extrusion and injection molding.
Create electrical test fixtures for engineering and production.
Develop mechanical packaging for power conversion products with sound engineering judgment.
Apply tolerances using worst case and statistical approaches.
Produce detailed drawings and BOMs for parts and assemblies.
Validate designs with FEA/CFD and thermal simulations.
Ensure safety, cost, performance, and schedule compliance (UL, CE, RoHS).
Fabricate rapid prototypes using 3D printers and workshop equipment.

Job description

Responsibilities

Own mechanical and thermal design of power electronics module utilizing 3-D solid modeling and simulation software which meet new and existing design and performance targets and/or eliminate problems.
Design of various components for casting, extrusion and injection molding.
Design of electrical test fixtures for engineering and production applications.
Design of mechanical package solutions for a variety of power conversion products applying in-depth knowledge of design constraints and a considerable degree of judgment.
Application of appropriate worst case and statistical tolerances.
Generate detail part and assembly drawings and bills of materials.
Create and maintain component and feature models for use in current and future designs.
Responsible for ensuring the structural and thermal integrity of designs using FEA and thermal simulation (CFD) software.
Responsible for ensuring designs meet cost, performance, and schedule and applicable product safety (UL, CE, RoHS etc.) requirements.
Utilize 3D printers, machine shop equipment and other site resources to rapidly fabricate models and prototypes or rework materials to prove designs concepts.
Interface with fabrication vendors to source designs, drive quality and schedules, qualify samples, and commission prototype and production tooling to schedule requirements.
Technical interface for outsourced design work such as shipping packaging.
Solves assigned technical products, component, or material problems affecting efficient operation and/or manufacture of product designs.
Provides feedback to customers and other design functions regarding design issues, quality, materials, etc.
Provides support to other engineering functions throughout the life cycle of product, from design through manufacturing and works with team members to resolve design or production problems.
Work closely with PCB design, electrical and process engineering to conceptualize and design the entire product electronic packaging for new products.
Influences others outside of team to ensure goals are met and resolves conflicts in an effective manner.
Must keep up to date with innovations and trends in Mechanical Engineering that apply to Power Electronics.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience (0 - 4 years of experience) preferred.
Software Experience: MCAD Solid Modelling (Solidworks, Pro-E (Creo), Catia)
Some experience in an engineering design or R&D environment desired.
Knowledge of Computer Aided Engineering/Simulation software such as FEA and CFD
Solid understanding of thermal analysis, cooling methodologies and design of experiments to validate results.
Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of internal customers and external vendors.
Ability to evaluate, diagnose, and troubleshoot problems.
In-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment used for fabrication of custom metal and plastic components and sub-assemblies including inspection techniques and quality standards.
Solid Knowledge of drafting standards such as ANSI/ASME Y14.5M.
Ability to apply GD&T principles when appropriate.
Good Knowledge of material finishes, cosmetic requirements, etc.
Knowledge of reliability and life expectancy principles.
Knowledge of related design verification and qualification testing.
Operating/Non-Operating shock & vibration Ingress protection per IEC 60529.
Demonstrated creative and innovative work is an asset.
