Piping Design Engineers are responsible for equipment and piping system designs including line sizing and pressure drop calculations. This will also involve the selection of piping components (e.g., valves, regulators, pumps, etc.).

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform relief valve sizing calculations to ensure safety and compliance with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31, API, and Boiler Pressure Vessel code).
  • Perform walk-downs and inspections of process and utility piping systems.
  • Prepare written reports, drawings/sketches, and technical documents (Equivalencies, P&IDs, data sheets, and bills of material).
  • Utilize appropriate regulations, design codes, and standards, including ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASTM, AWWA as well as other relevant industry standards.
  • Plan and self-perform project tasks including scope development, design timelines, requirements, schedule, research, design review, and field verification.
Recommended Attributes
  • Knowledgeable in industry piping codes such as ASME, ASTM, and AWWA.
  • Experience with design in systems such as potable water and fire-protection supply systems, gas supply systems, acid and caustic fluids, brines, cryogenics, steam and condensate, chilled water systems, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and vacuum systems.
  • Experience with pipe routing and piping component selection.
  • Technical knowledge of related engineering systems, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
  • Experience with Microstation or other CAD software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multifunctional team.
  • Ability to self-direct with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Highly detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks.

OR MS in Engineering /Physical science AND 2 years of relevant experience. OR PhD in Engineering /Physical science.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
  • 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
