About the Opportunity
Our client, a leader in Advanced Manufacturing/Automotive, is looking for a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team for an open-ended engagement. This project involves concepting, designing, building, and ramping custom automated manufacturing equipment at a world‑class Semi‑Truck facility. This is a demanding and fast‑paced environment where you will develop a new generation of leading‑edge manufacturing equipment. This is a high‑impact role that requires a self‑motivated professional who can hit the ground running and deliver results quickly.
Key Responsibilities & Deliverables
This role is focused on the successful completion of specific tasks and deliverables. Your responsibilities will include:
- Prepare and present overall machine design concepts for custom designed, special purpose equipment and systems.
- Execute detailed machine design for custom automated tooling, fixtures, mechanisms, and robotic end‑of‑arm tooling.
- Conduct detailed engineering analysis of custom mechanical components, including hand calculations and FEA.
- Coordinate fabrication and commissioning by creating detailed drawings, working with machine shops for custom parts, and partnering with technician teams for assembly and startup.
- Validate equipment performance and reliability, and create comprehensive equipment handover packages and system documentation.
Required Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone with a proven track record of successful contract engagements. The ideal candidate will have:
- 5 or more years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with experience as a leader of projects and/or people (lead or manager).
- Deep expertise in automation equipment design and custom machine‑building. This isn't a learning role—you need to be a subject matter expert.
- Experience with SolidWorks CAD and PDM software.
- Strong understanding of drafting standards and the application of GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
- Experience with various manufacturing processes (assembly, fastening, dispensing, laser welding, electrical testing) and the selection/integration of commercial components (sensors, servos, pneumatic actuators, etc.).
- Strong communication skills to provide clear and concise status updates to the project team and present at cross‑functional design reviews.
