The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of custom automation equipment, machinery, mechanisms, tooling, and End-of-Line (EOL) testing systems. This position works closely with Program Managers, Controls Engineers, manufacturing teams, customers, and external engineers to develop robust, cost-effective mechanical solutions from concept through build and installation. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience within an automation or machine‑building environment and strong proficiency with SolidWorks.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of mechanical design experience within an automation, custom machine build, or systems integration environment
- Strong SolidWorks experience designing automated equipment, machinery, mechanisms, fixtures, and/or tooling
- Experience creating complete manufacturing and assembly drawing packages
- Strong understanding of raw materials, fabrication processes, tolerances, and design for manufacturability
- Ability to evaluate customer specifications, quotations, and technical documentation and translate requirements into mechanical designs
- Ability to travel up to 20% to customer sites for design reviews, data collection, installation, and project support
Key Responsibilities
- Design custom automation equipment, machinery, mechanisms, tooling, fixtures, and EOL testing systems
- Develop mechanical designs from concepts and requirements provided by Program Management, customers, and engineering teams
- Use SolidWorks to create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production-ready drawings
- Prepare complete and accurate drawing packages for fabrication and assembly, including dimensions, tolerances, and required documentation
- Work closely with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, manufacturing teams, and customers throughout the project lifecycle
- Collaborate with Controls Engineers to ensure proper mechanical and controls integration, including pneumatic component selection
- Partner with shop and manufacturing personnel before and during equipment builds to resolve design and fabrication issues
- Develop mechanical solutions for production and manufacturing challenges
- Design equipment with reliability, maintainability, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness in mind
- Support installation, startup, and troubleshooting of equipment at customer facilities
- Support and improve legacy mechanical designs
- Communicate with suppliers regarding components, materials, and design requirements
- Apply established engineering standards, processes, and best practices
- Share design methodologies, standards, productivity tools, and lessons learned across the engineering organization
- Mentor less experienced designers and assist with concept development and design methodologies
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred
