Job summary

Pettibone seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Engineering team in Baraga, Michigan. This is a hands-on role designing rugged off-road machines and heavy equipment used in construction, forestry, steel, mining, railroad and seismic exploration.

You will work on vehicle structures, perform calculations, review SolidWorks drawings, and support cost reduction and continuous improvement while collaborating with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, sales and service teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 3 or more years of mechanical engineering experience required.
• Experience with mechanical design, structural components, weldments, sheet metal, or mobile equipment strongly preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks required.
• Experience with PDM and ERP/MRP software preferred.
• General knowledge of MathCAD, AutoCAD, DraftSight, Parker IQAN, and Zuken E3 is a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel occasionally, including overnight travel, as needed.

Responsibilities

• Design and redesign vehicle structures, sheet metal, heavy weldments, and related assemblies.
• Perform engineering calculations to determine component size, strength, and performance.
• Review and release drawings created in SolidWorks.
• Prepare change requests, requisitions, parts lists, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
• Use tools such as FMEA, FEA, 8D problem solving, and risk assessments to validate designs.
• Participate in design reviews with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, sales, and service teams.
• Support prototype builds and help test machines/components in real or simulated field conditions.
• Investigate field issues and help develop practical, data-driven corrective actions.
• Support cost reduction, manufacturability, and continuous improvement efforts on current products.
• Help maintain engineering standards, product documentation, and technical specifications.
