Job summary

eTeam in Huntsville, AL is seeking a SolidWorks-intensive CAD engineer to design and document aerospace, defense, and precision industrial systems. The role focuses on creating 3D models, generating 2D drawings, BOMs, and applying GD&T to ensure manufacturability.

You will modify drawings from engineering sketches, support manufacturing operations, verify conformance to standards, and collaborate with engineers and shop personnel to resolve design issues.

Qualifications

Specific Technical skills and experience

• Creates 3D models, details 2D manufacturing drawings, manages bills of materials (BOMs), and applies Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to support aerospace, defense, and precision industrial systems

Job Description:

• Creates and modifies detailed drawings using CAD hardware and software from sketches, layouts or notes provided by engineering.
• Contributes design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product.
• Checks drawing plots versus the project input for correctness and conformance to standards.
• Works with design engineers regarding model accuracy, design, drafting standards and ECN/ECR documentation.
• May work with system management including file maintenance, backup and storage by performing the following duties.
• At this level, tasks and assignments tend to be general but may involve complex and/or non-routine assignments and duties are performed under limited supervision.
• Must be highly motivated, team-oriented, quality focused and willing to work under schedule pressure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Designs major segments of complex subsystems.
• Creates 3-D models of parts and assemblies using SolidWorks 2023 SW to develop a subsystem layout. Prepares production drawings based on these models.
• Applies knowledge of materials, finishes, welding, and other manufacturing processes to drawings.
• Able to work within concept to and through manufacture environment
• Able to integrate and package electro/mechanical enclosures
• Able to perform Form, Fit and Function verification
• Works closely with and communicate to engineers and manufacturing personnel to ensure that all aspects of the design are understood.
• Serves as liaison with operations during fabrication of parts to ensure that all design issues are resolved and drawings are updated.
• Performs tolerance analysis on mating parts to insure proper fit. Applies knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to designs. MIL-STD, ASME, NAS and DOD standards apply.
• Develop concept, design and/or shop drawings from sketches and/or 3D models to meet ASME Y14 drafting standards that include layouts, plans, details, sections, or schematics
• Technically directs work and checks drawings of lower level drafters. Provides expertise in CAD software for specific problem solving on a project
• Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals/deadlines.
• May be requested to work with AutoCAD or similar SW tools such as SMAP 3D and DraftSight in preparation of 2D drawings.

The ability to work across all the listed disciplines is preferred, but must have experience working three or more of the listed disciplines:

• Mechanical - Machine/Equipment Design
• Mechanical – Piping
• Mechanical – Ventilation/HVAC
• Structural

Software Proficiencies:

• SolidWorks (5+ years of current experience required)
• SolidWorks PDM (experience preferred)

Education And/or Experience:

• Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university, Associates Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 plus years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Qualifications:

• Advanced skills in 3D solid Modeling/drafting using SolidWorks software
• Advanced skills in 2D drafting using AutoCAD, SMAP 3D or DraftSight software
• Advanced knowledge of conventional engineering drawing practices per ASME Y14 standards.
• Intermediate knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5
• Intermediate knowledge of machining operations and shop practices
• Familiar with and working knowledge of PDM file manager SW.
