Job summary

The Mechanical Commissioning Specialist at Manufacturing and Technology (M&T) leads planning, testing, and handover of mechanical systems in pharmaceutical facilities, ensuring cGMP compliance and clean utility integrity.

Reporting to CSU team leadership, you will coordinate with engineering, construction, quality, validation, operations, vendors, and owner reps to execute FATs/SATs, develop test plans, and deliver complete turnover packages for project acceptance.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop and review mechanical designs and commissioning requirements for HVAC, cleanroom air systems, chilled water, heating hot water, process cooling, pumps, compressors, and clean utility infra.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning from construction to handover.
• Witness FATs and SATs and document results.

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Commissioning Specialist is a discipline member of the Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) team responsible for planning, coordinating, testing, documenting, and commissioning mechanical equipment, HVAC systems, process piping, and clean utility systems for pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities. The role supports safe and compliant turnover from construction through start-up and operational readiness, with emphasis on current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), contamination control, system cleanliness, traceable test records, and approved acceptance criteria. The specialist works closely with engineering, construction, quality, validation, operations, vendors, and owner representatives to resolve deficiencies, manage punch items, execute FATs and SATs, and confirm that systems are complete, functional, documented, and ready for qualification and handover.

Major Responsibilities:

• Develop and review mechanical system designs and commissioning requirements for HVAC, cleanroom air systems, chilled water, heating hot water, process cooling, pumps, compressors, process piping, and clean utility infrastructure.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning of mechanical, HVAC, process piping, and utility systems from construction completion through start-up and handover.
• Witness and document factory acceptance tests (FATs) and site acceptance tests (SATs) as required.
• Ensure adherence to project safety requirements, safety protocols, permit-to-work processes, and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Develop and implement commissioning plans, system boundaries, checklists, test scripts, and acceptance criteria aligned with project, quality, validation, and operational requirements.
• Review and interpret drawings, P&IDs, equipment data sheets, control narratives, sequences of operation, vendor documentation, and project specifications.
• Prepare and review test plans, flushing and cleaning plans, pressure test packages, and system turnover documentation.
• Perform functional testing, performance verification, balancing support, and troubleshooting of mechanical and HVAC systems, including cleanroom temperature, humidity, pressure cascade, airflow, and recovery requirements, in accordance with approved project criteria.
• Coordinate with the CSU team, design engineering, construction, quality, validation, operations, vendors, and owner representatives to resolve technical issues and achieve system acceptance.
• Scope project drawings and define mechanical commissioning systems, subsystems, boundaries, and turnover packages.
• Complete and maintain the RASCI Matrix for mechanical commissioning activities and interfaces.
• Support reviews of performance curves, trends, trackers, test results, and user feedback to identify deficiencies and drive continuous improvement.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience Relevant experience should include commissioning, start-up, testing, or qualification support for mechanical systems in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life sciences, or other regulated manufacturing facilities.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills for coordination with engineering, construction, quality, validation, operations, vendors, and client teams. Experience with commissioning management software such as Hexagon Smart Completions and/or equivalent digital turnover and test-record systems. Experience in commissioning, start-up, qualification support, facility design, engineering, construction management, operations, or a related technical field. Demonstrated ability to lead discipline activities, coordinate field execution, mentor team members, and maintain accountability for safe, complete, and high-quality work. Knowledge of applicable mechanical and HVAC codes and standards, including ASHRAE guidance, project specifications, and owner requirements. Ability to identify owner goals, user requirements, system operating intent, acceptance criteria, and commissioning responsibilities. Working knowledge of pharmaceutical facility cGMP expectations, contamination-control principles, good documentation practices, and the interface between commissioning and qualification. Experience with or exposure to Hexagon Smart Completions software and structured system turnover processes. Familiarity with pharmaceutical mechanical systems and clean utilities, including cleanroom HVAC, pressure cascades, purified water, water for injection, clean steam, process gases, compressed air, chilled water, and associated distribution systems. Demonstrated experience working with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, construction, quality, validation, operations, automation, and vendor organizations. Demonstrated time-management and organizational skills required to meet schedule, documentation, safety, and quality objectives. Knowledge of cleanroom classifications, controlled environments, system cleaning and flushing, passivation interfaces, hygienic piping practices, and CIP/SIP system concepts.
