Job summary

Procon Consulting seeks a Mechanical Commissioning Agent (CxA) to lead commissioning across multiple sectors, from early design through warranty. Expect to manage BAS/SCADA systems, perform functional tests, and coordinate with MEP teams on diverse projects in the DC metro area.

The ideal candidate has a BS in mechanical engineering (ABET) or 5+ years in commissioning or 10+ years HVAC design, US citizenship, and a PE license or CxA certification is desirable.

Qualifications

  • PE license or ability to be licensed is desirable; CxA certification.
  • In-depth Building Automation System experience is a definite plus.
  • Most work will be in the DC/MD/NoVA area; travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning meetings across design, construction, and controls coordination.
  • Develop Pre-Functional Checklists and Functional Performance Tests.
  • Perform site observations, witness startups, and document findings.
  • Coordinate equipment startup and testing reports.
  • Issue resolution and collaboration with O&M teams.
  • Educate operations personnel on system functionality and performance.
  • Maintain commissioning plans, schedules, and documentation.
  • Lead mechanical commissioning projects from design to warranty per ASHRAE 0 and Procon processes.

Procon now seeks an Mechanical Commissioning Agent (CxA) to provide project support across multiple sectors, including government, military, K-12/higher education, and commercial facilities. This candidate will play a critical role in ensuring optimal building performance by leading commissioning efforts from early design through construction and the warranty phase. This position requires strong expertise in mechanical systems, building automation, and controls (BAS, SCADA). The ideal candidate should have experience working on diverse projects and be willing to travel throughout the U.S.

This is the last job you'll have. Work with an excellent team of engineers with a variety of disciplines, skill, and experience. Procon is an engineering firm, so if you don't have your FE and or PE and are working on it, we can provide you with the supervised experience that you need to move forward. The engineer's responsibilities will vary from performing commissioning work to design reviews, facility assessments, energy audits, and so on. We value an engineer with a well-rounded career and are looking for someone who will be a good addition to our group and at the same time be able to work completely independently with a minimum of supervision.

Requirements
Qualifications and Skills
  • The candidate must have (a) a BS in mechanical engineering or similar - preferably from a school with an ABET accredited 4-year program OR (b) 5 years experience in commissioning or 10 years in HVAC design.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • A PE license or ability to be licensed is desirable, as is CxA certification.
  • In-depth Building Automation System experience is a definite plus.
  • Most work will be in the DC/MD/NoVA area, however, depending on the project mix, up to 25% travel may be required.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), SCADA, and controls.
  • Must reside within the Washington, DC Metropolitan (DMV) area. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to and from project sites throughout the DMV area. Mileage reimbursement is not provided for routine travel between home and local project sites.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is preferred; candidates pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are encouraged to apply.
  • Opportunity to work under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), with qualifying experience counting toward PE licensure requirements.
Responsibilities And Duties
  • Commissioning Leadership: Conduct and lead commissioning meetings (design, construction, controls coordination) and document key discussions.
  • Develop and execute Pre-Functional Checklists and Functional Performance Tests.
  • Perform site observations, witness system startups, and document findings in field reports.
  • Coordinate and review equipment startup and testing reports.
  • Issue Resolution: Track and facilitate the resolution of commissioning issues.
  • Collaboration with O&M Teams: Educate Operations & Maintenance personnel on system functionality and performance expectations.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of commissioning processes, ensuring compliance with project requirements.
  • Lead and manage mechanical commissioning projects through the entire commissioning lifecycle, from pre-design and design through construction, occupancy, and warranty, in accordance with ASHRAE Guideline 0, client requirements, and Procon commissioning processes.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning plans, schedules, checklists, and documentation to ensure successful project execution.
  • Coordinate with owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders throughout all phases of the commissioning process.
  • Serve as a Mechanical Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME), performing mechanical and plumbing design reviews and construction submittal reviews.
  • Evaluate mechanical and plumbing systems, identify issues or risks, and provide technical recommendations to support project success.
  • Support commissioning activities including functional performance testing, issue resolution, deficiency tracking, and final project closeout documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project teams while ensuring compliance with industry standards, client expectations, and quality requirements.
