Mechanical Chargehand

Role / Requirements:

Due to continued expansion, we are currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Chargehand to be based on a prominent client project. The Mechanical Chargehand plays a key role in supporting the delivery of mechanical works on M&E contracting projects. This involves supervising day‑to‑day site activities, coordinating mechanical operatives, and ensuring smooth integration with electrical teams and other trades. The role is hands‑on, requiring strong technical ability, leadership, and a sharp focus on safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

• Lead and coordinate a team of mechanical fitters/pipefitters/technicians on M&E projects.
• Delegate tasks, monitor progress, and ensure daily targets and milestones are met.
• Act as the primary link between the mechanical team, electrical teams, subcontractors, and site management.
• Help plan work sequences to support efficient cross‑trade coordination.
• Oversee and carry out installation of mechanical building services.
• Ensure all installations meet project specifications, drawings, and industry standards.
• Support commissioning and testing activities.
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues and guide the team in resolving them efficiently.
• Inspect completed works for accuracy, quality, and compliance.
• Ensure documentation, red‑line drawings, and snag lists are completed and maintained.
• Work closely with QA/QC and project engineers to address any issues.
• Promote and enforce a strong safety culture.
• Lead toolbox talks, contribute to RAMS, and ensure the team follows site protocol.
• Ensure safe operation and maintenance of tools, plant, and equipment.
• Report hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, supervisors, and the electrical department to ensure smooth handovers and workflow.
• Provide daily progress updates and flag potential delays early.
• Assist in managing materials, stock levels, and scheduling deliveries.

Key Skills and Competencies:

• Trade Qualification
• 3–5+ years’ experience on mechanical building services installation within an M&E contracting or construction environment.
• Strong understanding of mechanical building systems and how they interface with electrical services.
• Experience supervising small to mid‑sized teams.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
