Salary Grade: NC06 / Salary Range: $34,270.00 - $59,973.00
All recommended salaries are based on the applicant's qualifying education and related experience in conjunction with the position's budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $48,129.
This is an extended posting through May 30, 2025, for Vehicle/Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 13, Madison County. Multiple VERT I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants need only apply once to be considered for all VERT I vacancies in each respective county during this period. Applicants interested in multiple counties must apply to each relevant posting. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits, including health insurance, retirement, vacation, and sick leave.
Positions in this class perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment repair. Work includes service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of mechanical systems for various gasoline, diesel, and alternative-powered engines/equipment. Tasks range from inspection and routine service to complex mechanical analysis using diagnostic instruments and software, including failure analysis. Work involves determining materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish assignments, which vary in complexity depending on the mechanical system or components involved. Typical tasks include inspecting and replacing brake pads, replacing regulators, alternators, belts, fitting aftermarket upgrades, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing tires, wheels, lighting, cooling, and hydraulic systems. Employees may work in adverse weather conditions, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

The selected candidate must be able to operate CDL-required equipment/trucks with manual or automatic transmissions at hire or within 360 days. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement or the ability to obtain one is required. Pre-employment drug testing, background checks, and safety footwear are mandatory. The candidate must furnish a complete set of tools.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT's post-offer evaluation.

Possession of EPA certification as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician may be required.
