Job description

This position performs skilled supervisory work in the maintenance and mechanical repair of City of Wichita vehicles and equipment. The employee plans, assigns, and reviews the work of mechanics and service attendants while also performing complex diagnostic and repair tasks. Work is received in both verbal and written form, and the employee is responsible for establishing work priorities and determining appropriate methods and procedures to complete assignments.

Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 4:30 PM - 1:00 AM

  • Schedules and supervises the work of employees.
  • Helps in diagnosis and repair of difficult mechanical repairs.
  • Estimates time and material required to repair vehicles/equipment.
  • Reviews parts requirements and places orders for replacement parts.
  • Inspects buildings, machinery and equipment to identify need for repair work.
  • Coordinates with storeroom personnel for parts and material needs.
  • Ability to utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System and maintain records and compiles reports as required.
  • Evaluates work procedures and recommends methods to improve productivity and efficiency.
  • Ensures quality repairs through re-inspection and road testing.

  • Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the vehicular maintenance and mechanical trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of vehicle/equipment fabrication, frame repair, welding, and related work.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft products such as Excel and Word.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for six to eight hours per day using a computer.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to paints, solvents, and fluids used in shop work.
  • Ability to read and apply information contained in technical repair manuals.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and employees of other Departments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain (within 120 days of start date) a valid Kansas class "A or B" commercial driver's license (CDL) with Passenger (P) endorsement. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.

Required Experience and Training

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance on vehicular equipment.
  • Two years of supervisory or lead-worker responsibilities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
  • A valid Kansas Driver’s license.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class "A or B" commercial driver's license (CDL) with Passenger (P) endorsement. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • Previous experience, knowledge, and operation of electric propulsion vehicles.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
