Job summary

Outagamie County is seeking an experienced Mechanic to repair and maintain vehicles, construction equipment, and airfield assets. Duties include diagnosing defects, overhauls, lubrication, welding, and airfield safety inspections.

Shift: 2:00pm–10:00pm; additional snow operations with 12-hour winter shifts. Requirements include an associate degree in mechanics or equivalent experience, FAA knowledge preferred, and ability to lift up to 100 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in mechanics with engines/heavy equipment focus.
  • Airport experience and FAA regulations knowledge preferred.
  • Or any mix of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.
  • Knowledge of department policies and Outagamie County Work Rules.
  • Knowledge of automotive, construction and specialized equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools, test equipment and diagnostic equipment; engine principles.
  • Welding practices and techniques knowledge.
  • Ability to diagnose defects and repair engines, assemblies and components.
  • Ability to read repair manuals, diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to complete oral and written reports and records.
  • Ability to work long hours including evenings, weekends and holidays during snow/ice operations.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio and understand FAA phrases.
  • Ability to learn FAA parts 107 and 139.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain good working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate in English and perform basic math.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and perform physical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses mechanical defects in automotive, construction and road equipment.
  • Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems.
  • Performs lubrications and preventative maintenance; welds equipment as needed.
  • Maintains time and material records for each project.
  • Performs airfield safety inspections of runways and maneuvering areas.
  • Performs air conditioning and overhead door repairs; handles snow removal operations.
  • Assists in grass mowing and other airfield tasks; orders supplies.
  • Maintains the SRE building as required; conducts continuous airfield inspections.
  • Maintains regular attendance; works overtime as required; performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor: Airfield, the Mechanic performs skilled repair and maintenance on all vehicles, construction equipment, and other complex and specialized equipment. Also assists in airfield maintenance.

Hours: 2:00pm - 10:00pm 2nd shift also snow operations 12 hour shift during winter weather

  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses automotive, construction and road equipment for mechanical defects.Performs general repairs and overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines, components and systems.
  • Overhauls, repairs, adjusts and rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and components of vehicle and equipment ignition, hydraulic, steering, braking, electrical, fuel, exhaust, cooling, suspension, components and mechanisms.
  • Performs lubrications and related preventative maintenance functions.Welds equipment to fabricate, rebuild, and strengthen vehicle parts and other equipment.
  • Maintains records of time and materials on each project.
  • Performs airfield safety inspections of runways and aircraft maneuvering areas.
  • Performs repairs of air conditioning systems and overhead door assemblies.
  • Performs snow removal operations including plowing, brooming, sanding and de-icing applications.
  • Assists in grass mowing and other airfield tasks, including fence repair.
  • Orders supplies as they related to the maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains SRE building, as required.
  • Conducts continuous airfield inspections looking for and removing objects which could cause damage to aircraft.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Associate Degree in mechanics with specific training in engines and maintenance of heavy equipment with at least four years experience
  • Airport experience and knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration regulations preferred
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to conform to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department as well as the Outagamie County Work Rules and Terms of Employment.
  • Knowledge of construction, assembly, overhaul, adjustment and maintenance and repair procedures of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment, subsystems and components.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use all types of tools, test equipment and diagnostic equipment of the mechanical trade, knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of welding practices and techniques.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and make repairs to engines, assemblies, components, and other systems on automotive, construction and other specialized equipment and also to detect by inspection, worn and broken parts, and parts that have been assembled incorrectly.
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals, diagrams and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to complete oral and written reports and records.
  • Ability to work long hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays during snow and ice removal operations and as circumstances dictate.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.Ability to learn and use standard airport phraseology.Must be capable of hearing and responding to transmissions by air traffic control tower personnel and airport staff.
  • Ability to learn and apply FAA regulation parts 107 and 139.
  • Ability to follow instructions, exercise good judgment and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English and understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and figure simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, bend, stretch; push, pull, and lift up to 100 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
