Job summary

Outagamie County is seeking a Mechanic/Maintenance Technician to perform building, equipment and grounds maintenance. The role reports to the Shop Foreman and Equipment/Facilities Superintendent and requires CDL eligibility, strong troubleshooting, and the ability to work independently or with a team.

Flexibility for after-hours call-ins is essential, with 15-minute response and 45-minute on-site requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position in a county highway shop environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with industrial arts or building trades classes.
  • At least two years of experience in construction, remodeling or maintenance work.
  • Valid CDL Class A, B, C, or D with N endorsement or ability to obtain within two years.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds.
  • Repair and maintain tires, tire chains, and highway vehicles as needed.
  • Troubleshoot building systems (boilers, AC, plumbing, electrical).
  • Read blueprints and schematics; operate and repair plumbing and electrical gear.
  • Communicate with staff and supervisors to diagnose equipment issues and perform tasks.

Job description

The Mechanic/Maintenance Technician is a safety-sensitive position subject to DOT drug & alcohol procedures, must be available to report to work during regular business hours and must be available after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Reporting to the Shop Foreman and/or Equipment/Facilities Superintendent, the Maintenance Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds.

Hours

Winter hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Summer hours are Monday-Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., based on a 40-hour workweek with opportunities for overtime. Schedules may fluctuate due to seasonal demands and workload, so flexibility is required. Employees must be available for after-hours call-ins to respond to emergencies or highway conditions, with the ability to answer calls within 15 minutes and report to work within 45 minutes.

Seeking a candidate with a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. This position performs building and grounds maintenance as well as some limited equipment maintenance.

  • Must be available to report to work after hours to respond to emergencies and/or highway conditions. Availability is the ability to respond to a phone call within 15 minutes and report to duty within 45 minutes.
  • Repairs tires and tire chains for highway vehicles, performing road service, replaces/repairs tires when needed.
  • Maintains appearance of buildings and grounds, sweeping, mopping, painting, and mowing grass, shoveling or blowing snow from sidewalks and other tasks as required.
  • Requisitions inventory for tires and tire chains as needed.
  • Operates and maintains tools such as hand, power, mechanics, carpentry and plumbing.
  • Troubleshoot and make minor adjustments to boilers, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems, keeping equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Makes minor repairs to plumbing, repairing leaks, replacing piping, valves, soldering and assembling joints as needed.
  • Makes minor repairs to electrical equipment, wiring, switching devices, controls, outlets, fixtures, motors and other such equipment.
  • Communicates effectively with field staff, shop personnel, and supervisors to diagnose equipment issues and complete assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Provides on-call coverage as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • High School graduate or G.E.D., with specialized classes in industrial arts or building trades; at least two years of experience in construction, remodeling or maintenance work, with particular experience in carpentry, plumbing, masonry and/or electrical work, and experience troubleshooting systems.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B, C, or D with N (Tanker) endorsement, or the ability to obtain required licensure and endorsements within two (2) years of hire. Must be legally qualified to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), including vehicles equipped with air brakes, manual transmissions, tractor-trailers, and tank vehicles, with no disqualifying restrictions.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to conform to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department as well as the Outagamie County Work Rules and Terms of Employment. Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of building systems and make repairs.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics and architectural drawings.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in general maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets and follow standard safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to operate a light truck or other vehicle and possession of a valid CDL driver's license.
  • Ability to safely operate small power equipment such as lawn mowers, riding mowers, edger, trimmers, etc.
  • Ability to use and understand mechanical gauges.
  • Ability to use computers for recordkeeping, time reporting, emails and operation of the building system.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and work semi independently.
  • Skill in the use of tools.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, bend, stretch, push, pull and lift or otherwise move weights up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
