Mechanic / Machinist - Kalispell (26140753)
Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting a Mechanic / Machinist to maintain and repair gasoline and diesel machinery, fabricate specialized parts, design systems, and troubleshoot equipment.
Responsibilities
Inspect, determine repair courses, machine or replace parts, assemble and install components, test equipment performance, and follow established maintenance procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2–4 years of experience in diesel heavy equipment/truck or light‑duty vehicles; see level requirements below.
- Valid Montana Commercial Operators License (Class A, Type II) with no restrictions, tank endorsement, and valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC). Permit holders may obtain the full license within 30 days. Forklift certification must be obtained within 3 months.
- Fabrication and welding experience desirable.
Education & Experience Levels
- Mechanic/Machinist I – Starting Pay $30.09: 2 years experience in diesel heavy equipment/truck or light‑duty vehicles.
- Mechanic/Machinist II – Starting Pay $30.59: 3 years experience in diesel heavy equipment/truck or light‑duty vehicles.
- Mechanic/Machinist III – Starting Pay $31.09: 4 years experience in diesel heavy equipment/truck or light‑duty vehicles.
Additional Requirements
- Driver’s record will be verified; applicant must sign a release form for permanent driving record checks.
- Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201 and MDT Policy #6.03.001 is required.
- Applicants may be invited to a written test, practical test, and behavioral‑based interview.
