Walworth County in Wisconsin seeks a skilled diesel/heavy-truck technician for Fleet Operations. You will diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on county vehicles and equipment while performing routine maintenance and safety-focused tasks.

This position is responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems on County owned vehicles and equipment. This position is also responsible for routine maintenance on County owned vehicles and equipment.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of county-owned vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose problems with the equipment/vehicles.
Replace and rebuild brakes, clutches, hydraulics, engines, and other systems on equipment/vehicles.
Fabricate and set up new and used equipment/vehicles.
Wire and repair electrical systems on county-owned equipment/vehicles.
Demonstrate a commitment to county safety and risk management efforts.
Other duties as assigned.

High school diploma plus one additional year of formal preparation and four to five years of relevant prior experience; or high school diploma or equivalent competencies and six to seven years of relevant prior experience. An ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in either E, G, L1/2/3, MIL, or S Series is preferred. Experience performing repairs on heavy trucks and equipment strongly preferred. Desired experience in operating heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle trucks, front-end loaders, dozers and motor graders. Welding experience preferred.
Valid Wisconsin Class A, B, C, D Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement N - If permanent license is not held at time of hire, then as a condition of employment a permanent license must be held within six (6) months of date of hire.
Must own and maintain a personal set of tools. Employees in this position will receive up to a $400 annual tool allowance for the purchase of tools when the employee provides a receipt for purchases made in the calendar year per Walworth County Ordinance Section 15-393. The county will purchase on behalf of the mechanic, a policy insuring the employee’s personal tools up to a maximum of $75,000.
Must wear steel toe safety shoes. Employees in this position will receive an annual stipend for the purchase of safety shoes per Walworth County Ordinance Section 15-394.
Ability to drive a 64,000# GVW truck with manual transmission.
Ability to work long hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Knowledge of vehicle diagnosis and maintenance.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations governing equipment operation.
Knowledge of preventative maintenance of equipment (i.e. truck, tractor, end-loader, backhoe, grader).
Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and precautions necessary for safe operation of motor-driven equipment, including operation over rough, slippery, icy or unstable conditions.
Ability to perform repairs on heavy trucks and equipment.
Ability to understand, remember and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work overtime as required including on-call winter schedule from October 15th through April 15th.
Ability to utilize basic computer skills to document work efforts and complete timecards.
Responds to others' requests for basic and general information.
