Job summary

Columbia County (FL) seeks a skilled automotive mechanic to perform repairs on a wide range of vehicles and construction equipment. You will work under the Mechanic Shop Foreman, performing diagnostics, tune-ups and major overhauls for gasoline and diesel systems.

The role requires a high school diploma and two years of journeyman level experience, or equivalent training. A Florida driver’s license is required; CDL Class B is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Knowledge of automotive trade methods, materials, tools and standard practices.
  • Ability to diagnose troubles in automotive and public works equipment; follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and overhauls on trucks, automobiles, fire and rescue vehicles, light and heavy construction equipment.
  • Rebuilds and tunes motors; uses testing equipment; understands transmissions and brake work.
  • Evaluates condition of construction equipment, locates faults and makes repairs.
  • Repairs of hydraulic systems on construction equipment.
  • Prepares records and reports on work accomplished.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as lubrications, oil changes and service checks.
  • Installs and assists with installing special automotive equipment.
  • General shop maintenance and clean up.
  • Required to work during a local declared state of emergency.

Job description

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, fire and rescue vehicles and maintenance equipment. Performs skilled work in repairs to automobiles, draglines, trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, fire and rescue vehicles and a wide variety of other construction and maintenance equipment. Work includes both gasoline and diesel fueled apparatus. Employees work under the supervision of the Mechanic Shop Foreman. Employees use independent judgment concerning the methods of repair after receiving oral or written work orders from the Mechanic Shop Foreman.

WORKING CONDITINS

Shop conditions with disagreeable elements or factors such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, dust, noise, or vibrations. Exposure to dirty, oily, greasy elements. Works inside and outside shop area. In or with moving objects or vehicles. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical that screens for acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without correction), the ability to sit for extended periods, and manual dexterity needed to operate job related machinery.

Minimum Experience: High School graduation, and two (2) year journeyman level experience in the field of automotive mechanics, or graduation from an approved course in the trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required. CDL Class B driver’s license preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade
  • Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of construction equipment and similar machinery
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines
  • Ability to diagnose troubles in automotive and other public works equipment
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to follow automotive diagrams
  • Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade
