Job summary

The City of Santa Rosa is seeking a skilled mechanic to perform maintenance and repairs on a wide range of fleet equipment, from trucks to construction machinery. This role requires reading work orders, performing diagnostics on gasoline and diesel engines, and providing emergency roadside service when needed.

Applicants must have a high school diploma and two years of maintenance experience, be able to meet safety standards, and be prepared for a drug test as part of the hiring process.

  • Four-year high school diploma or equivalent, with two years of automotive/heavy equipment maintenance experience.
  • Must possess a complete set of basic tools.
  • Valid driver's license; Class B CDL with air brake endorsement preferred.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs ignition and fuel systems on gasoline and diesel engines; electrical and lighting systems.
  • Completes detailed work order completion forms.
  • Provides emergency roadside service and repair outside garage.
  • Performs basic steel fabrication and modification of various brackets.
  • Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • May have a role in disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts as designated in the County plan.

General Description

Performs skilled work in maintaining and repairing trucks, cars, tractor mowers and a wide variety of automotive and construction equipment.

This is a “Mandatory Testing” position that requires Drug Testing.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs basic repair and preventative maintenance on all fleet equipment ranging from chainsaws to construction equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs computerized ignition and fuel injection systems on gasoline and diesel engines; electrical and lighting systems.
  • Completes detailed work order completion forms.
  • Provides emergency roadside service and repair outside garage.
  • Performs basic steel fabrication and modification of various brackets.
  • Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.

  • May have a role in the County’s disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during and/or after an emergency.

Essential Physical, Visual And Communication Skills

The physical requirements are that of very heavy work and include exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; recurring climbing, bending, crouching stooping, kneeling, crawling, stretching, reaching or similar activities in restricted areas; recurring lifting of heavy items over 50 pounds. Requires repetitive motion of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Requires fingering to include picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand as in handling. Requires grasping by applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm and feeling to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Required to operate a motor vehicle.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures. Transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.

Requires the expression or exchange of ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Requires perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

Environmental Conditions

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions where conditions cannot be controlled and/or is exposed to one or more disagreeable conditions such as irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, vibration, extreme temperatures, odors, dust, oils, fumes, lubricants, chemicals, close quarters, etc. more than 50% of the work time.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, tools and materials used in the mechanic trade; operating principles of gasoline and diesel fueled combustion engines; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the trade.

Required to use various of hand and power tools of mechanics trade; testing instruments.

Required to determine cause of faulty operations and determine corrective action; establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and public.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a complete set of basic tools to perform job functions.

Licensure And/Or Certifications

Requires a valid driver license at the date of hire and maintain said license while employed in this position. A Class “B” commercial driver license with air brake endorsement is preferred.
