Job summary

Hernando County BOCC is seeking a Crew Leader to coordinate field activities for a public works crew and prepare job-site paperwork. The role involves safety meetings, supervising crew tasks, and operating heavy equipment as needed.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, 3+ years in public works and heavy equipment operation, and a Florida Class A CDL with a tankers endorsement within six months. Emergency response duties may apply.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in public works maintenance and construction projects and three (3) years’ experience in the safe operation of heavy maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Inmate Crew Leader requires specialized courses or training in Law Enforcement and/or Department of Corrections.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Class A driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Tankers endorsement required within six months.
  • FEMA NIMS IS-100.c/IS-200.b/IS-700.b certifications within three months.

The starting pay for this position is $23.60 hourly plus benefit and retirement options.

Examples of Duties

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload.

  • Coordinates all field activities of the crew assigned, to include but not limited to conducting safety meetings on site with crews assigned, communicating with the field supervisor as needed to support crews' efforts, communicating and resolving field conflicts, and ensuring all job site paperwork is completed timely and accurately for daily work assignments.
  • May operate one or more of heavy public works maintenance and construction equipment for most of the workday on an assigned basis. Examples of this type of equipment are backhoes, mini-excavators, excavators, front end loaders, tractors with boom mowers, tractors with mower attachments, clamshell type lifting devices and asphalt patch trucks.
  • Reviews all work performed by crew and directs any changes necessary to obtain the required quality of work or the desired product. Mentors and instructs crew members on work methodology and procedure. Communicates effectively with field supervisors to ensure problems are resolved on a timely basis.
  • Occasionally operates gasoline or other powered machinery such as cement mixers, woodchippers, air compressors, chain saws, and air blowers, and equipment required of an equipment operator. May be assigned to operate specialized equipment on a temporary basis involving emergency situations or for training purposes.
  • Attends crew meetings, safety and project meetings and required training.
  • May be required to perform “on call’ duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response.
  • Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or other management personnel.
Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in public works maintenance and construction projects and three (3) years’ experience in the safe operation of heavy maintenance and construction equipment
  • Inmate Crew Leader Requires Specialized courses or training in Law Enforcement and/or Department of Corrections.

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
  • Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Class A driver’s license and be insurable by the current insurance carrier.
    • Required to obtain a tankers endorsement within six (6) months.
  • Must have or be able to obtain certification within three (3) months of employment in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
    • IS-200.b: IC for Single Resources & Initial Action Incidents
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Work is heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses)
  • Walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, lifting, repetitive motion, speaking, visual acuity, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, eye, hand and foot coordination.
  • Works outdoors in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, heavy rains and wind, and vibration.

Pay Grade: 7

Salary Disclosure: Pay rates are based on policy, education, skill, experience level and internal equity.
