Qualifications

Job description

Are you someone who is ready to make a difference within their local community? If so, the City of Flagstaff is seeking a qualified Mechanic II to join our team!

As the City’s newest Fleet Mechanic II, you will actively support and uphold the City’s mission and values. You will oversee maintenance and service of the City’s fleet, including light-duty vehicles (sedans, SUVs, pickups) and heavy-duty equipment (refuse trucks, loaders, emergency vehicles). Your responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repairs, and inspections to keep the fleet safe and operational. Your attention to detail and safety commitment will support the City’s goal to provide reliable service to the community.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs automotive and heavy equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, sweepers, loaders, public safety, and snow removal equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs air conditioning systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs gasoline and diesel engine components.
  • Inspects, maintains, and diagnoses issues with hydraulic systems, air brake systems, fuel injection systems, and diagnostic on-board computer systems.
  • Inspects and repairs transmissions and differentials as required.
  • Performs MIG welding and oxy-acetylene torch fabrication and repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections, lubrication, and oil changes.
  • Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, door glass, door handles, hydraulic components, and brakes.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs, work orders, and time worked.
  • Works in the field and shop as assigned.
  • Makes service calls and field repairs for inoperable equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two years of specialized or technical training beyond high school.
  • Four years of experience as a professional mechanic, including two years as a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Desired Experience and Training
  • Trade school certificate in automotive or diesel mechanics.
  • ASE Master Automotive/Master Truck Certification.
  • EVT Certification and fire apparatus experience.
  • Welding experience.
Other Requirements
  • Regular attendance is essential.
  • Must possess a Class 'B' CDL with Hazmat and Tanker endorsements within 3 months (City will pay for this).
  • Must furnish own hand tools.
  • Subject to drug screening and random tests.
  • Must respond timely and be available for emergency work.
  • Willing to work 12-hour shifts during snow removal, including weekends and holidays.
  • Willing to perform field service in inclement weather.
  • Principal residence within Arizona; arrival within 1 hour of notification.
  • May require IMAC certification.
