Job summary

IDS Inland Deicing Services, LLC in Cedar Rapids, IA, seeks a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to ensure the performance and safety of engines, drives and ground support equipment. You will diagnose, repair and maintain diesel machinery, electrical and hydraulic systems, while logging work via CMMS.

This full-time role requires English fluency, a basic toolset and the ability to work outdoors in varying conditions. Some travel may be required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections and mechanical troubleshooting on engines, transmissions, suspensions, braking and electrical systems.
• Troubleshoot electrical and hydraulic issues using schematics, blueprints and manuals.
• Log work orders and track parts usage; manage inventory with CMMS.
• Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules, safety practices and environmental laws.
• Maintain a safe, clean and compliant work facility; communicate equipment status regularly.
• May train or supervise others as needed.

Position Overview:

• Mechanics play an important role in ensuring proper performance, safety and reliability of vehicles and ground service equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform skilled preventative maintenance, inspections, and mechanical troubleshooting on engines, transmissions, suspensions, braking, and automotive electrical systems.
• Utilize diagnostic tools, schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals to troubleshoot complex electrical and hydraulic issues within established timeframes.
• Log work orders, track parts usage, manage inventory ordering, and maintain records using Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS).
• Partner with station management and team members to ensure compliance with maintenance schedules, safety practices, site audits, and environmental laws.
• Conduct regular spot checks on tools and equipment, maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant work facility at all times.
• Maintain daily communication regarding equipment status and remain prepared for off-shift response based on weather forecasts and operational needs.

Required Skills & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent, minimum age of 18, and fluency in reading, writing, and verbally directing in English.
• Strong knowledge of diesel-powered machinery, ground service equipment, fluid types, and specialized diagnostic testing tools (scanners, meters, photo tachometer).
• Hands-on mechanical skills encompassing basic engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, brake, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair.
• Must own a basic set of mechanics tools, including sockets/wrenches up to 1 inch in size and up to 1/2-inch drive.
• Basic to intermediate computer literacy with effective time management to handle multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with clients and staff while maintaining complete confidentiality.

Certifications & Licenses

• Valid driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• May train, supervise, and provide feedback on tasks performed in relation to position.

Work Environment

• Physically strenuous environment with prolonged periods of standing.
• Direct exposure to outdoor weather, varying temperatures, humidity, unpleasant odors, and heavy moving machinery.
• Noise levels in the working environment can be excessive at times.

Physical Demands

• General Mobility: Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using hands to handle tools.
• Lifting & Heights: Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to or in excess of 100 pounds and work at heights exceeding 20 feet.
• Sensory Readiness: Must possess clear speech and efficient hearing capabilities.

Position Type & Expected Hours

• Full-time position with a minimum expectation of 40 hours per week.

Travel

• Position requires some travel (domestic and/or international), possibly on short notice, to meet immediate operational needs.

Security Clearance

• Ability to obtain and maintain all security clearances required by Transport Canada, TSA, and/or local Airport Authorities.
• Ability to pass pre-employment background screenings.
