Your Impact

The focus of the maintenance team is to keep equipment in the RDC fully operational. The RDC Maintenance Mechanic I is a knowledgeable repair person with exposure to and experience with RDC systems and building components. The Maintenance Mechanic I has specialist knowledge and complex repair capability in one of the following areas: conveyors, rolling stock, or building. In addition, the individual in this role has general knowledge and basic repair capability in the other two areas outside his/her specialty. In all instances, the Maintenance Mechanic I has sufficient electrical and mechanical knowledge to safely and independently repair equipment in the RDC. The Maintenance Mechanic I is able to integrate his/her trade skills, classroom knowledge, and systems experience to recognize and diagnose equipment issues, determine the type of repair needed, prioritize and plan the work, obtain or order the appropriate spare parts, and execute the repair. This individual is capable of mentoring a Maintenance Utility, but also seeks assistance from a Maintenance Mechanic II or the Maintenance Supervisor, when needed.

What You Will Do

  1. Maintain appropriate certification as required by state and local regulations.
  2. Determine safety precautions and requirements for tasks.
  3. Prepare worksite; perform lock-out/tag-out.
  4. Gather tools and spare parts for tasks.
  5. Use tools safely; check condition of tools prior to using; use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  6. Evaluate condition of equipment; determine spare parts needed and repair effort required; recognize potential for breakdown in near future and take pre-emptive action.
  7. Plan work and execute tasks.
  8. Mentor Maintenance Utility; use these associates as assistants if appropriate.
  9. Seek assistance from a more experienced mechanic if needed.
  10. Leave worksite in good condition.
  11. Turn in unused spare parts.
  12. Document condition of equipment as found, work performed, spare parts used, and other applicable information.
  13. Enter data into the 7I system (computerized maintenance management system); close out work orders and Preventative Maintenance (PM) requests.
  14. Inform next shift of remaining work.
  15. Provide status of incomplete tasks bridging the two shifts.
  16. Demonstrate positive and effective communication with maintenance customers.
  17. Serve as an expert in two of the following specialty areas: conveyors, rolling stock, or building.
  18. Within specialty areas: diagnose, plan, and repair complex equipment failures with minimal guidance from Maintenance Mechanic II and Supervisors.
  19. Outside of specialty areas: diagnose, plan, and execute basic repairs.
  20. Attend and participate in training as scheduled; continue to increase skill in his/her specialty area and learn and develop a working knowledge of repair methods for other work areas, including conveyor systems, controls, subsystems, industrial electrical systems, HVAC, fire suppression, welding and fabrication, plumbing and carpentry, forklift and material handling systems, and preventive maintenance technologies.
  21. Note: Some states have specific regulations concerning this type of work, and those regulations will supersede the training noted here if applicable.
  22. Perform additional tasks as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor.
  23. Provide additional training to Maintenance Utility as required.
  24. Assist with changing batteries in equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or GED graduate and 1-2 years of experience in her/his specialty area.
  • 1-2 years of experience and/or technical training in electrical/electronic theory up to 600 volts systems (or willingness to obtain appropriate training within 1 year of employment).
  • Valid in-state driver’s license.
  • If required by local regulations, certified to perform work at the Maintenance Mechanic level (such as electrical work in Oregon).

Preferred Skills/Education

  • Experience and/or certification with welding and fabrication.
  • Experience operating various maintenance and operations vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience reading blueprints, schematics, and other technical drawings.
  • Certification for electrical work and/or high voltage work.
