STARTING SALARY RANGE: $22.43 - $24.67 per hour

POSITION: Mechanic I

POSITION NO: 7.125

DEPT: Public Works

This is skilled mechanical work repairing, diagnosing, and maintaining vehicles and related equipment. An employee in this position generally performs preventive maintenance work on a wide variety of City vehicles and equipment but may be required to perform or assist with higher level mechanicaland repairwork.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard principles and practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety precautions to avoid occupational hazards.
  • Skilled in using tools, machines, and testing instruments used in fleet maintenance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose automotive and other equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; follow automotive diagrams.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments related to department’s needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties; perform work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, pull, push, and maneuver bulky and heavy materials; lift objects up to 75 pounds and routinely lift up to 50 pounds overhead; climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch frequently and for extended periods of time.

Training, Certification, and Experience

High School Diploma or GED supplemented by courses in the automotive mechanics trade.

Minimum of two years experience in repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.

Or, an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Special Requirements

  • Valid Florida Commercial “B” driver’s license or obtain license within six months of employment.
  • Must obtain automotive tools as required by the City.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification (F-1) Inspection, Maintenance, and Testing of Fire Apparatus, or obtain certification within one year of employment.

The following two certifications must be obtained during the second and third years of employment (one each year, as assigned by Director):

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification (E-0) Inspection, Maintenance, and Testing of Ambulances.
  • Automotive Service Excellence Certification (T8) Preventive Maintenance Inspection.
