Qualifications

Responsibilities

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety and reliability of County owned vehicles and equipment. This position preforms troubleshooting, repairs, emergency roadside services, and /or overhauls of major components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related computer assisted electrical, electronic, braking, hydraulic, fuel and other assemblies. This role involves working on a wide range of equipment from small engines to large construction machinery, agricultural tractors, and fleet vehicles. Duties include following instructions contained in technical manuals for teardowns, adjustments, repairs, reassembles, and completes operational checks in components of the systems; and using wide variety of electronic diagnostic equipment conducts test and analyzes test results on vehicles and equipment. This position conducts independent research to diagnose drivability and performance issues and determines the best diagnosis and repair methods too reliably correct the issue. Additionally, this role disassembles, repairs, replaces, reconditions and rebuilds components of various systems, and makes independent judgments based on specifications in technical manuals and on accepted trade practices. This position must obtain ASE certification or stay current with industry certifications, examples of which are listed below in the certification list.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:


  • Performs a variety of preventative maintenance duties as scheduled, including checking lights, tune-ups, oil changes, lubrications, and replacing wipers, batteries, lights, belts, hoses, brakes, and worn tires.

  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment, including major repairs to transmission and engine systems.

  • Repairs and replaces parts as needed.

  • Inspects equipment to ensure compliance with federal OSHA/NFPA specifications and identifies needed repairs.

  • Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly shop.

  • Performs electrical system repairs and diagnostics, as needed.

  • Cleans various units, as necessary.

  • Provides emergency field assistance and repairs, as necessary.

  • Operates various vehicles and heavy equipment for testing and repairs.

  • Conducts road tests after repairs are completed to ensure vehicles are mechanically safe and function properly.

  • Reviews work orders to ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.

  • Maintains records of work completed and parts used.

  • Attends training classes, workshops, and meetings as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.

  • Assists with ordering parts and supplies and obtains parts from vendors, as necessary.

  • Repairs, rotates, balances, or replaces tires.

  • Performs body work or painting, as necessary.

  • Installs special equipment on equipment.

  • Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment prior to maintenance.

  • Installs emergency lights and custom lights for safety and visibility on vehicles and equipment.

  • Serves on-call 24 hours per day for emergency repair service.

  • Utilizes diagnostic tools to pinpoint complex problems with vehicles and equipment.

  • Upfits vehicles with specialized equipment and lights for fleet readiness.

  • Performs welding and fabrication work as needed.

  • Performs services and inspections on small engine equipment, large diesel trucks, and construction equipment.

  • Coordinates appointments with dealers and vendors for alignments, glass repair, and other service work.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to work with computers.

  • Ability to work with torches, plasma cutters, and welding equipment.

  • Ability to use hydraulic press and drill press equipment.

  • Ability to understand technical manuals, charts, schematics, and diagrams.

  • Ability to operate diagnostic computers and scanners.

  • Ability to operate hand and pneumatic tools, volt meters, and HVAC equipment.

  • Advanced mathematical skills.

  • Good problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required: CDL, or ability to obtain within one (1) year. Forklift Certification, or ability to obtain.


Preferred: None.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.


This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a high risk indoor and/or outdoor work environment; may encounter noise, weather, extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, fumes, gases, vibration, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards, bio-hazardous waste, moving mechanical parts, or working in high places. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves, or eye shields.
