Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform complex repairs and maintenance on County-owned trucks and heavy equipment. The role includes leading work activities, diagnosing and repairing vehicles, and performing preventive maintenance.
Qualified candidates should have a High School Diploma or GED, vocational training, and four years of experience as an automobile technician. A valid driver's license is required, with a CDL preferred within the first year.
The purpose of this classification is to maintain and repair County‑owned trucks and heavy equipment, including but not limited to large grounds maintenance equipment, tractors, and mowers.
Positions in this class take the lead in performing the most complex diagnosis and repair of fleet vehicles, including full engine, transmission, and rear‑end work, and PARKS ground care equipment.
Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co‑workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co‑workers; assists with complex situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co‑workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.
Performs inspections: inspects and tests all truck and heavy equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, hydraulics, HVAC and emissions; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains required parts; performs emission tests per frequency and criteria specified by state law; inspects and tests completed work; and updates required records.
Performs routine and complex repairs on trucks and heavy equipment: gathers information from equipment operator reports, fault codes and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; completes required repairs; and ensures operation and performance is within specified limits.
Performs preventive maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment: checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune‑ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.
Determines amount of materials required for projects: gathers equipment, parts and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools and supplies in order to complete work assignments; and operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle‑specific maintenance tool sets.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred and must be obtained within 12 months of hire date.
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery or electric currents.
