Community is the cornerstone of the Y. Together, we connect active, engaged New Yorkers to build stronger communities.

To help fulfill our mission, we cultivate a culture of learning, leading, and collaboration to enhance community impact. Through our talented staff and “LEAP” career framework (Leadership, Empowerment, Accountability, Personal Growth), we are committed to a people-first approach that fosters trust, inclusion, growth, and development for all.

The Staten Island YMCA South Shore is seeking a Mechanic who, under the direct supervision of the Property Manager, will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems at the YMCA and its off-sites. The role includes performing building repairs, maintenance, cosmetic upgrades, and general cleaning of the YMCA and surrounding areas, including sidewalks, hallways, stairways, bathrooms, shower rooms, offices, and program areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and swimming pool equipment (where applicable).
  • Perform building construction work as directed by branch leadership.
  • Clean all bathrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, Fitness Center, Free Weight Room, offices, Gymnasium, and other spaces within the branch.
  • Store all deliveries, move furniture, set up and break down rooms, and remove snow.
  • Strip and wax floors and shampoo rugs as needed.
  • Inform the Property Manager of all building issues.
  • Responsible for painting when assigned.
  • Follow standards set by DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD, and ECB Departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of mechanical test equipment and safe handling of cleaning chemicals (MSOS).
  • Maintain FDNY, DOB, and DOH logbooks as required.
  • Ability to maintain and repair pools, including reading and troubleshooting.
  • Current Fire Safety Director certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Building Certification within three months of employment.
  • S12, S13, and C42 Pool Certifications within one year.
  • Flexible working hours, including overnight shifts and being on call 24/7 when the Property Manager is off-site.
