Job description

Overview

We are seeking skilled Maintenance Electronic Controls personnel to plan and layout work, analyze and repair electrical control systems for industrial equipment including NC/CNC machining systems, mini-computers, microprocessors, AC/DC drives, process controllers (PLC), etc. Seniority may determine shift assignments; this role has a high probability of requiring off-shift schedule.

What YOU Will Do
  • Investigates faults or difficulties being reported by the operations team on equipment controlled by multi-purpose electronic and/or electro-mechanical control systems. After analyzing the reported malfunction and determining the level of repair needed, notify supervisor and begin the repair process. These repairs include but are not limited to wiring, controls, components replacement and/or control modifications that are needed to bring the equipment back to its safe and compliant operation. Provide a detailed summary of repairs and/or control updates, and request that any spares used be evaluated for replenishment. Work with Facilities and/or automation engineers to evaluate failed components. Together they can determine if OEM or a certified repair process for component rebuild/refurbishment is a viable option.
  • Determines proper method of removing covers or machine guarding to gain access to components for testing and repairs. Removal or installation of electrical cabinets and guarding must be done by following industry applicable safety protocol.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and determine proper method for repair or replacement of failed components. Submits information to supervisor or Facilities office for approval of subsequent repair or necessary purchases.
  • Installation and maintenance on electrical equipment that powers factory machinery such as lathes, multi-axis drilling and milling machines, paint booths, automated assembly and layup robots, electric welders, and items of similar complexity.
  • Ability to work from work orders, service requests, blueprints, wiring sketches and electrical schematics. Utilizes verbal information from senior employees in your field of expertise, maintenance supervisors and/or Facilities engineers.
  • Once repair or installation is complete, test equipment to ensure safety, performance, and accuracy meet requirements before turning over to end users. Responsible for reporting mechanical problems to the supervisor and locking out unsafe systems. Proactive in proceeding with necessary repairs utilizing relevant safety protocols. Reviews schematics, wiring diagrams, performance specifications and manufacturing manuals to become familiar with the design and operating requirements of the equipment and the multi-purpose electronic and/or electro-mechanical control systems.
  • Ability to set up and operate a variety of highly sensitive and precise electronic test tools and equipment. Conduct functional and operation testing on electrical equipment. If the repair is performed on a machine or robot, operate the controller to run necessary cycles and calibration routines to ensure readiness for production.
  • When asked, assist with planning upcoming installations, repairs, and preventive maintenance of electronic and/or electro-mechanical equipment. Perform preventive maintenance using work orders and relevant schematics and user manuals.
  • Make critical adjustments during troubleshooting and testing events, including ladder logic, parameter settings, PLC programming, and other electrical components to properly sync, align and tune highly inter-related circuits and systems.
  • Establish arrangement and location of components to eliminate electronic interference and ensure proper heat dissipation and safe access for preventive maintenance.
  • Analyze and repair automatic control instruments and related recording devices used in the operation of industrial manufacturing equipment such as ovens, furnaces, clean rooms and autoclaves. Adjust mechanisms controlled by the above devices.
Job Requirements
  • The ability to read and interpret maintenance blueprints and specifications, and apply shop mathematics.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments such as multimeters, voltmeters, clamp meters, power monitors and other tools and gauges used to analyze and repair electrical components.
  • Requires broad shop trade knowledge of electronic and electro-mechanical industrial equipment control systems, with strong theory and understanding of the equipment.
  • Use appropriate PPE and follow safe procedures when working on electrical panels and components.
  • Willingness and ability to instruct and assist less experienced electricians and electrical mechanics.
  • A physically demanding role with exposure to loud noises, potential hazards, and often dirty environments, requiring protective gear, frequent standing, lifting heavy parts, and working in tight spaces.
What YOU Must Bring To Succeed
  • HS Diploma/GED equivalent
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience.
Preferred Characteristics
  • Hands-on experience with Siemens and FANUC NC, PLC, and HMI systems. Experience with Ladder Logic
  • Prior use of AutoCad Electronics toolbar for schematic creation.
  • Experience performing electrical work in a large industrial setting.
  • Four (4) years of hands-on experience with electrical control components for automation and numerical control equipment
  • Ability to run laser trackers for multi-axis machine alignment.
  • Strong communication and team-building skills with experience supporting and modifying controls and alignments of multi-axis drilling equipment and large CNC milling machines.
  • Understanding working knowledge of autoclave controls and process on both electric and gas-fired units.
  • A Journeyman Electrician license that is current with the State of Maryland.
