Job summary

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform tasks relating to other industry trades preferred (i.e. electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.).
  • Knowledge of basic regulations governing safety relating to the mechanics/maintenance craft.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require frequent heavy lifting.
  • Focused on safety and security of District staff and students.
  • Experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail.
  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Responsibilities

  • Paint surfaces: prep, prime, and finish on buildings, floors, lockers and other facilities.
  • Protect furnishings and materials during painting work.
  • Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, patching, masking, and nail hole repair.
  • Remove graffiti and clean walls to minimize vandalism.
  • Match paint samples for touch-ups and small projects.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Major responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

Painting

  • Prepare surfaces prior to beginning work
  • Paint a variety of surfaces (e.g. buildings, parking lot markings, floors, lockers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in an attractive, safe, and usable condition
  • Protect all nearby furnishings and building materials before and during every painting job, including carpets, cabinetry, outlet covers, lighting fixtures and landscaping
  • Prepare a variety of surfaces (e.g. cleaning, sanding, patching, masking, nail holes, cracks, joints, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that they are ready for painting and/or refinishing
  • Remove graffiti (e.g. cleaning walls, graffiti removal, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing vandalism and maintaining attractive facilities
  • Match paint samples for touch-ups and other small projects

General

  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively
  • Recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, including Public Employee Occupational Safety and Health Act (PEOSHA) regulations, practice safe work habits
  • Utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions the appropriate administrator
  • Be available when called upon by the Supervisor or Central Administrators after the regular workday for weather related and general emergencies.
  • Will be required to support projects and initiatives in other departments throughout CCSD on an as-needed basis
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Supervisor's designee

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequently moves items weighing up to 50 pounds to pack, load, and deliver orders; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Frequently lifts items weighing up to 50 pounds, including raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position
  • Frequently bends and twists holding items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Climbing/balancing - maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces
  • Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist
  • Crouching - bending body downward and forward by bending leg and spine
  • Reaching - extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Possible exposure to a range of childhood and adult illnesses.
  • Subject to extreme temperatures (temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour, which may be exacerbated by wind and/or humidity)
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
  • Moderate to high at times, noise level especially during school hours, assemblies or events.
  • Frequent interruptions from calls, walk-ins and urgent requests.
  • Possible exposure to cleaning agents, instructional materials, and equipment-related chemicals.

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD, AND UNION AFFILIATION

Salary Range:

  • Communications Workers of America (CWA) Mechanic ESalary Scale

Employment Period:

  • Twelve months, non-tenurable position

MINIMUM STARTING SALARY: $39,851.01

MAXIMUM STARTING SALARY: $56,149.75

Residency Requirement

Under New Jersey's "New Jersey First Act" (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7), all employees of New Jersey public school districts must maintain bona fide New Jersey residency as a condition of employment. Candidates must already reside in New Jersey or establish residency within the required timeframe after hire. Current employees who were hired on or before September 1, 2011 are exempt from this requirement and may continue to reside outside the state. In limited circumstances, applicants may request a residency waiver through the state's Employee Residency Review Committee if they can demonstrate critical need or hardship; approval is not guaranteed.
