Summary
The Mechanic Apprentice is typically currently enrolled in High School or recently graduated and has a desire to further explore the field of Diesel Maintenance. This role will assist different departments throughout ATS Maintenance to learn various aspects of planned and unplanned maintenance and repair procedures. They will learn a variety of functions within the areas of body damage and repair, parts and inventory, diagnostics, and customer service. The Mechanic Apprentice will also learn to troubleshoot and repair electronic circuits under the supervision of shop mentors.
Education And Experience
- Basic knowledge of and interest in learning automotive, and medium/heavy truck preventive maintenance (lube, grease, filters) is preferred but not necessary. Will provide on-the-job training and mentorship. Access to basic preventative maintenance tooling & equipment provided.
- Desire for a career in a diesel shop.
- Strong work ethic, ability to work well as part of a team, and mechanical aptitude required.
- Ability to work cleanly and safely.
- Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail, and customer service skills (internal/external).
- Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
- Firm understanding of basic computer operations including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
- Good communication skills (written, listening, and verbal).
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist with work orders within the body shop, parts department, and tractor and trailer maintenance.
- Perform all assigned work, including minor repairs and preventative maintenance services.
- Partner with assigned mentors and senior technicians in completing large and complex repairs.
- Will learn to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electronic circuits on trucks and trailers.
- Perform shop clean-up, housekeeping responsibilities, and other miscellaneous-related duties as assigned.
- Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is always used.
- Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands-on training provided by OEM and Factory.
- Document work order details within the Company’s CMMS program.
- Follow all ATS department policies and procedures.
- Support ATS’ culture by aligning actions, behaviors, performance, and decisions in accordance with the Company’s values as set forth in our All-Employee Competencies.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Constantly positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to work on equipment. Frequently moving about to obtain tools, supplies, and parts and to inspect equipment. Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position, or enter data into the computer. Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair. Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures, and timelines.

Exposure To
- Loud noises constantly require hearing protection.
- Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
- Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, and odors constantly.
- Situations requiring eye protection and steel-toed boots.
Compensation & Benefits
- The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $18.50 - $18.50. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work . In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
