Class A Mechanics needed at our Axis, AL location.

Pay: Starts at $32 per hour

Schedule: Rotating 2/2/3 shift, 2 weekdays then 2 weeknights

Position Overview

Class A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is the senior-level mechanic classification responsible for advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, inspection, and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment used in steel mill service operations.

This position is assigned to mechanics with strong field experience, advanced technical ability, and the ability to work independently on complex equipment failures. A Class A Mechanic is expected to diagnose major issues, perform high-level repairs, support equipment reliability, and assist lower-class mechanics when needed.

Class A is a higher-level mechanic position based on experience, skill level, diagnostic ability, and the ability to complete major repairs with limited supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, brake, drivetrain, engine, cooling, and fuel system issues on heavy equipment.
  • Perform advanced repairs on loaders, excavators, material handlers, haul trucks, forklifts, skid steers, service trucks, and other industrial support equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, transmissions, axles, differentials, hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, air systems, brakes, starters, alternators, wiring, sensors, and control systems.
  • Use diagnostic software, meters, pressure gauges, schematics, technical manuals, service information, and testing procedures to identify root cause failures.
  • Perform major component repairs and replacements with limited supervision.
  • Inspect equipment for safety defects, leaks, worn components, structural damage, abnormal wear, tire or track issues, and unsafe operating conditions.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, hose repairs, and field repairs as needed.
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency repairs to minimize downtime and return equipment to service safely.
  • Assist with failure analysis and recommend corrective actions to improve equipment reliability.
  • Mentor, guide, and assist Class B Mechanics and less experienced maintenance employees.
  • Lead job assignments and direct one or more Class B mechanics and/or trainees in the field.
  • Communicate repair plans, equipment status, parts requirements, downtime concerns, and safety issues to supervisors and maintenance leadership.
  • Clearly communicate equipment condition and urgency of repairs in a timely and effective manner.
  • Complete work orders, inspection forms, repair records, labor entries, and parts usage accurately.
  • Maintain tools, service trucks, shop areas, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Follow all company, customer, OSHA/MSHA, lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space, and site safety requirements.
  • Perform all maintenance duties as required, including preventive maintenance (PMs), lubrication, and routine servicing.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical school, diesel technology training, heavy equipment certification, military mechanic experience, or equivalent hands‑on experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of heavy equipment mechanic experience preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air systems, brakes, drivetrains, steering systems, cooling systems, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Ability to independently diagnose complex equipment failures.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, hydraulic and electrical schematics, service manuals, parts diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Experience working on Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, John Deere, Liebherr, Sennebogen, Taylor, Kalmar, Case, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Welding, fabrication, torch cutting, and field repair experience preferred.
  • Must own tools required to perform job duties listed.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • CDL, welding certification, forklift certification, crane certification, or mobile equipment certifications are a plus.
  • Must be able to pass required background check, physical exam, and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Work Environment

This position works in and around active steel mill service operations. Work may be performed in shops, yards, roadways, production support areas, and field locations. Conditions may include heat, cold, dust, noise, vibration, uneven ground, heavy equipment traffic, grease, oil, hydraulic fluid, fuel, slag, and other industrial materials.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy tools, parts, and components.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and industrial conditions.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel‑toe boots, FR clothing, respirator, harness, or other site‑required equipment.
