Job summary

Century Aluminum Company in Goose Creek, SC is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 8 to perform industrial mechanical maintenance, fabrication, installation and repair of machinery and facilities under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

You must have five years of heavy equipment maintenance experience or an equivalent apprenticeship and a high school diploma or trade training; the role requires safe work practices, strong diagnostic skills and the ability to read blueprints.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years industrial mechanical maintenance experience.
• Formal Apprenticeship or equivalent trades training is desirable.
• Vocational or high school graduate or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Must demonstrate the ability to comply with all Mt. Holly and plant PPE requirements and safety protocols.
• Must possess the skills and abilities to work autonomously while conducting routine mechanical tasks.
• Familiar with the handling, operation and safe use of all types of Mechanical Equipment including hydraulic systems, gearboxes, conveyor equipment, vibrating feeders, hammer mills, cranes, mechanical drives and assorted industrial equipment.
• Tools and equipment used are hand tools, measuring devices, power tools such as drill presses, saws, grinders, breaks, benders, shears, iron workers, pipe cutting and threading equipment, etc. Welding, burning and metal joining equipment, hoists, cranes, mobile equipment, test instruments, gauges, equipment ladders, scaffold, hand and power tools common to the trade.
• Read and work from blueprints, sketches, charts, manuals, instruction books, diagrams and other information and instructions. Fill out reports and other necessary paperwork.

• Perform cutting, welding, brazing and soldering work with metal sheet and plate, including the necessary layout work.

1.0 Purpose:

To define the qualifications and duties for a Maintenance Mechanic.

This position reports to a Maintenance Supervisor.

2.0 Scope:

Responsible for fabricating, installing, inspecting, testing, repairing, operating and maintaining all types of machines, equipment, structures and facilities in a safe and orderly manner as directed by a Maintenance Supervisor.

Five (5) years industrial mechanical maintenance experience.

Formal Apprenticeship or equivalent trades training is desirable.

Vocational or high school graduate or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

The tasks listed are the most physically demanding tasks required of the Maintenance Mechanic position.

• 1) Standing: Worker stands on concrete (constant basis).
• 2) Walking: Worker is walking on concrete floors during the shift (constant basis).
• 3) Strength:
  • A. Lifting: Worker is required to lift equipment, tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs., setting up of scaffolding.
  • B. Carrying: Carrying various parts and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • C. Pushing/Pulling: Utilizes hand tools such as cheater bars to change out parts, pulling ropes, utilizing pulleys or block & tackle. Some torque involving applying up to 250 ft. lb. of pressure.
• 4) Climbing: Of steps and of ladders on top of crane (occasional basis).
• 5) Balancing: Good balance skills required in being on top or sides of high equipment, having to tie off to prevent falls.
• 6) Bending: Occasional during the changing out of parts.
• 7) Kneeling: Frequent
• 9) Reaching: Full ROM of UE required to change out parts, works overhead with tools.
• 10)Handling: Good manual dexterity required, works with hand tools, pneumatic tools, jackhammers, changes out hoses, couplers and motors. Worker also is required to perform welding activities. Tools and equipment also include machine parts, metal stock, pipe, tubing, fittings, bolts, nuts, washers, compressed gases, oil grease, paint, insulating materials.

• 13)Positions: Maintenance Mechanic is often working in tight, awkward positions to repair or PM equipment. Difficult to utilize proper body mechanics.

3.1 Specific Duties for Shift Maintenance Workers

Exercise extreme caution while working alone on many tasks

Assist other maintenance shift workers throughout the plant in repair efforts to minimize call-ins of day shift personnel

Assist assigned crew with execution of planned activities such as PM's, lubes, or standing work orders as assigned by the maintenance supervisor

Understand and activate the "Maintenance Help Chain" as necessary to prevent excessive production interruptions

Prioritize work requests or have the Potline supervisor prioritize requests in the event of multiple requests simultaneously

Assess non-routine breakdown situations and recommend necessary resources when help is required

Provide accurate feedback to the appropriate maintenance personnel regarding turnover information on breakdowns and trouble calls

Practice established maintenance process techniques at all times, some examples include: accurate and detailed information on work orders, applying parts removal tags on rebuild items, immediately return to stock warehouse issues that were not needed, proper coding of emergency work orders and ensure all stock issues are charged to work orders
