Job summary

Job Description: Auto Body Mechanic

The Auto Body Mechanic is a highly skilled professional who excels in inspecting vehicle mechanical components and engines, diagnosing problems, and performing necessary maintenance and repairs.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Location: Full Time Hourly/Commission

Job Responsibilities
  • Diagnose mechanical faults using computerized diagnostic equipment or manually identify issues that the diagnostic tools cannot detect.
  • Replace or repair any engine components.
  • Service and repair vehicle transmission systems.
  • Maintain and repair brake systems, including disc and drum brakes.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical system issues, such as problems with the battery, starter, and alternator.
  • Perform wheel alignments and tire services.
  • Replace or repair suspension and steering components.
  • Conduct emissions tests and ensure emissions meet regulatory standards.
  • Replace exhaust systems.
  • Change oil and perform necessary fluid services.
  • Replace or repair fuel system components.
  • Service or repair hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
  • Maintain and repair hydraulic systems in applicable vehicles.
  • Document all repairs and maintenance in the appropriate systems.
  • Provide repair estimates, timelines, and seek center leader approval for work to be performed.

  • Customer Service Index Score 95+ for Quality, Done on Time, and Net Promoter Score
Skills/Technical Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an Auto Body Mechanic and proper training/certification
  • Mechanical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with complex electronic control systems
  • Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment well.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and repair guides.
  • Knowledge of vehicle safety standards and regulations
  • Basic understanding of automotive repair techniques

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in an automotive repair shop environment for extended periods.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in various positions, including underneath vehicles, inside engine compartments, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally, with heavier items moved using assistance or mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers for repetitive grasping, handling, manipulating, and operating hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
  • Ability to safely operate vehicle lifts, jacks, alignment equipment, and other automotive service equipment.
  • Ability to visually inspect vehicle systems, diagnose mechanical issues, read gauges and diagnostic equipment, and identify defects, including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear and interpret vehicle noises and other auditory indicators related to mechanical diagnosis and repair.
  • Ability to enter, exit, and maneuver around vehicles of various sizes and configurations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, estimators, technicians, customers, and coworkers regarding vehicle conditions, repair recommendations, and repair status.
  • Ability to safely navigate around moving vehicles, equipment, tools, and active repair operations.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to noise, vibration, dust, fumes, oils, chemicals, and varying temperatures while using required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to maintain productivity, accuracy, and quality standards in a fast-paced repair environment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
