Mechanic

Job Summary

DPW Mechanics perform maintenance and repair for motorized equipment assigned to the Department of Public Service, Building and Maintenance, Police and Fire Department. Work is usually unsupervised with specific assignments given by the Superintendent. The employees of the City are required to serve citizens and customers in a tactful, courteous manner; establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, directors, elected officials, and general public.

Nature of Work Duties
  • Performs preventative maintenance to transmission, differentials and clutches
  • Installs new ignition components such as plugs, condensers, points, and ignition wiring, set timing, and engine tune-ups
  • Test drives trucks and other equipment to verify proper operation of engine and/or brake systems
  • Cleans garage area and maintains garage equipment
  • Recommends purchase of garage equipment and supplies
  • Advices supervisors on condition of garage equipment
  • Keeps cost and time records of repair on each vehicle
  • Advises Department Head in preparing equipment specifications for accepting bids for new equipment
  • Maintains parts inventory
  • Investigates and pinpoints trouble areas in cases where outside repairs are needed
  • Maintains current manuals for machine maintenance such as service manuals, maintenance manuals and parts breakdown
  • Follows proper safety practices
  • Fills fuel tanks, lubricates and changes oil and filters on equipment
  • Performs engine tune-ups on equipment replacing plugs, condenser and points
  • Replaces universal joint, water pumps, burned out lights
  • Services or changes batteries, changes mufflers, tailpipes
  • Assists in maintaining all mechanical equipment utilized
  • Records vehicle mileage, date and maintenance performed
  • May obtain or exchange items still in warranty such as parts, filters, tires and other equipment as needed
  • At times of emergency, may be called upon to take part in the repair, cleaning and maintenance of streets, water and sewer lines and snow and ice control
  • May change, balance and repair tires when appropriate
  • Performs other maintenance repair of construction tasks as assigned in the Department of Public Service, Water Department, and Building and Maintenance Department
Environmental Conditions and Equipment Used
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor working conditions and a loud amount of noise
  • Exposure to conditions that include poor ventilation, fumes, odors, etc.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts and toxic/caustic chemicals
  • Uses tools and equipment that are relative to the position, including mechanical hand tools, power tools, electronic equipment, spot-welding machine, etc.
QualificationsMinimum Training, Licensing, Education and Experience
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have earned a High School degree or equivalent
  • Must be able to pass a Civil Service examination and a drug test
  • Must have basic mechanical training obtained from practical training or high school, Armed Service or vocational school
  • Must hold active State of Michigan mechanic certifications in at least three applicable repair categories and maintain certification as required. ASE certification does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Must have a basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge and ability to interpret material of a technical nature, such as equipment manuals
  • Must have knowledge of tools that are standard and metric
  • Have an ability to improvise or make suggestions to improve the efficiency/effectiveness in completing jobs
  • Must have knowledge and application of proper safety practices and be able to work without direct supervision
  • Must have an ability to take initiative, make decisions and be accountable for action taken
  • Must be able to work overtime when required
  • Must have an ability to constantly perform physical labor requiring strength, stamina and some heavy lifting
  • An ability to perform work involving frequent mental and/or visual effort with periods of intense mental application or attention to details

  • Must have the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form
  • Must be able to read at a level to understand procedures and methods related to the job, as well as communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Must have math ability that includes algebra and finance skills
  • Must be able to complete medium work that includes exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and/or 250 pounds with assistance of another person
  • Must be able to perform essential job duties requiring manual dexterity, reaching, and repetitive movement, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and receive detailed information through oral communication and/or make fine distinctions in sound
  • Must have visual acuity for determining accuracy, thoroughness of work and observation of general surroundings and activities
  • Must be able to adapt to changing situations, work well with others and participate in a team-oriented environment
  • Must be able to be customer oriented and maintain excellent customer service
