Job description

Performs general service, tune-up, maintenance, and repair on a wide variety of City vehicles and equipment; maintains service records; and performs other work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a full working level classification in the Mechanic series where incumbents perform a wide variety of mechanical maintenance and repair duties on City vehicles and equipment.

This class is distinguished from the higher-level class of Senior Mechanic in that the latter serves as a lead worker, with responsibility for leading and monitoring the work of subordinate Mechanics and for coordinating day-to-day shop operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general supervision from the Maintenance and Safety Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Participate in the repair, maintenance, and service of automotive vehicles and other motorized equipment, including but not limited to, light, mid-range and heavy duty trucks, ambulance and police vehicles, backhoes, loaders, caterpillars, paving equipment, compressors, generators, sewer cleaning equipment, motors, chain saws, snow removal equipment, etc.; perform field repair on equipment as needed; transport equipment for outside repairs as needed and follow up on warranties and recalls.
  2. Setting up or decommissioning vehicles by removing or installing radios, emergency lights, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, police gun racks, cages, videos, radar, spike stripes, prisoner seats, cell phones, computers, and other equipment.
  3. Perform maintenance and repair of CNG and battery electric vehicles.
  4. Diagnose vehicle or equipment malfunctions and determine effective corrective measures; work with others to gather necessary information with a positive attitude, asking questions and gaining a clear understanding of the work being requested.
  5. Maintain and trouble-shoot electrical systems, air and hydraulic brakes, hydraulic systems, pumps, etc.; operate electronic test equipment; contact suppliers and order materials; weld and fabricate parts, as needed; design and engineer modifications to improve ease of operation and extend life of equipment.
  6. Maintain records regarding work activities and material usage; enter data into computerized systems.
  7. Use and care for tools, equipment, and materials used in the course of duties.
  8. Coordinate assigned activities with those of other divisions, departments, outside agencies, and organizations as required.
  9. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
  10. Perform as a member of the team; act ethically and responsibly; support and demonstrate engagement in diversity, inclusion and equity and maintain effective working relationships with others; demonstrate professionalism and respect in all workplace interactions.
  11. Arrive to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintain regular job attendance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years experience maintaining and repairing automotive equipment.

Substitution: Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may substitute for the above requirements.

Desirable Qualifications: Specialized training in automotive repair, electronics, and heavy equipment is desirable; experience and/or training in welding and metal fabrication is desirable. Possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon Class A driver's license by the time of appointment is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

License: Possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon drivers license by the time of appointment. Ability to obtain and retain a Class A license within one year of hire.

Other: Employee must own and provide the tools and toolbox required for the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of
  1. Various mechanical and electrical systems of gasoline, diesel, and propane engines.
  2. Emission systems and associated test equipment.
  3. Computerized engine standards.
  4. Principles and operations of gasoline, diesel, and propane engines.
  5. Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and propane-powered vehicles, equipment and related parts.
  6. Hydraulic and air brake systems, automotive electrical, carburetion, and cooling systems.
  7. Hydraulic pumps, motors, and valves.
  8. Standard shop safety procedures.
  9. Basic computer operations, including standard business software.
Ability to
  1. Diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical and drivability problems associated with gasoline, diesel, and propane driven equipment.
  2. Use various hand and power driven shop tools.
  3. Use acetylene and arc weld equipment.
  4. Maintain clear and accurate records.
  5. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  6. Operate a personal computer and standard business software.
  7. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Work is performed in a shop environment with frequent exposure to loud and very loud noises, moving parts/vehicles, chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances; work is occasionally outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions. Work occasionally involves confined spaces.
