Job summary

State of North Carolina’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services seeks a Meat & Poultry Inspector I (S). You will perform ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections, verify product labels, and ensure compliance with HACCP plans across three inspected plants in New Hanover County.

Onsite work is required during normal hours; training consists of six weeks on-the-job and six weeks classroom instruction, followed by periodic updates.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years of experience in inspection, production, management or sale of meat/poultry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Successful completion of required Meat and Poultry Inspection Training Programs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections of slaughtered livestock.
• Observe humane handling and evaluate plant sanitation procedures.
• Verify HACCP plan implementation and collect samples for analysis.
• Document noncompliance and enforce actions up to suspension of operations.
• Onsite inspections with varied shift times; may require overtime or weekend work.
