Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Travel within Oklahoma daily and some overnight travel for out-of-state meetings.

Job description

  • Perform inspections at meat and poultry plants in Oklahoma to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations
  • Quickly identify abnormalities in food animals prior to and after slaughter
  • Recognize and identify actual and potential food safety hazards in the meat-processing environment
  • Perform agriculture inspections at meat processing establishments
  • Complete and submit reports and documents
  • Collect, package and ship samples
  • Inspect, sample and investigate facilities or individuals regulated by the Food Safety Division
  • Operate and maintain monitoring and detection equipment
  • Travel to multiple locations within Oklahoma on a daily basis, including some overnight travel for out-of-state meetings
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in an agricultural, biological, plant, animal, physical or natural science, food technology, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or completion of a two-year meat science program
  • Knowledge of procedures for inspecting, evaluating and grading various agricultural commodities
  • Knowledge of state and USDA regulations governing standards and transport of applicable agricultural products
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding packaging, labeling and other agricultural-product standards
  • Knowledge of environmental and sanitation standards
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in the applicable agricultural industry
  • Knowledge of various types of animal and plant diseases
  • Knowledge of record keeping and basic mathematics including percentages
  • Knowledge of English usage
  • Ability to conduct inspections to determine compliance with established standards, laws and regulations
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to attend to several matters simultaneously
  • Ability to operate and maintain monitoring and detection equipment
  • Ability to apply research methodologies
  • Valid driver's license required for job-related travel
  • Willingness/ability to work in extremely hot or cold environments and around sharp tools and equipment
  • Professional conduct representing the State of Oklahoma
  • Subject to a twelve-month probationary period
