Job summary

Hen House, part of the Balls Food Stores family, is seeking a reliable Meat Clerk to support the meat department. You’ll help guests find the right cuts, keep products fresh, and ensure proper presentation in a fast-paced store.

This role emphasizes guest-focused service, food safety, and teamwork. You will stock, label, and rotate products, follow FIFO, and collaborate with teammates to deliver great shopping experiences.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Grocery/retail or meat department experience preferred.
• Knowledge of food safety and sanitation preferred.
• Experience with meat cutting, knife handling, or meat/seafood preparation preferred.
• Ability to recommend cuts, preparation and cooking methods.

Key Responsibilities & Job Duties

• Provide friendly, helpful, and respectful guest service at all times to ensure a positive shopping experience and encourage repeat visits
• Package and label meat products accurately in compliance with weight, pricing, and regulatory guidelines
• Assist guests with product selection, custom cuts (as applicable), and cooking recommendations
• Stock, rotate, and face products using FIFO methods to maintain freshness, minimize waste, and ensure an appealing presentation
• Monitor product dates, storage conditions, and temperature logs to maintain quality and reduce shrink
• Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked service cases and displays
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and temperature control of all meat products
• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene standards
• Operate equipment such as scales, wrappers, scanners, and basic cutting tools safely and accurately
• Develop and maintain knowledge of meat products, pricing, and promotions to better assist guests and drive sales
• Monitor inventory levels and communicate low, excess, or damaged items to department leadership to support product availability
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in both sales floor and backroom areas
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with teammates, leadership, and vendors to support efficient operations
• Collaborate across departments to support overall store performance and guest satisfaction
• Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including attendance, conduct, and dress code standards
• Remain productive during slower periods by cleaning, organizing, restocking, or supporting other departments

Minimum Qualifications

• Required: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
