Job description

St. James Parish Government is hiring a Part Time Meals Truck Driver / Custodian for the Department of Human Services/Elderly Services.

JOB FUNCTION: Individual must pick up and deliver home-delivered meals to a specific destination; each undelivered meal should be given to the next client. Individual must be willing to use personal vehicle in the event the meal delivery truck assigned to their workstation is not available. He/she must be willing to help provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment at the senior center. This position is classified as non-essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters and non-exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Pickup and deliver meals to elderly persons
  2. Maintain a safe-operating and clean vehicle
  3. Ensure confidentiality of all persons served
  4. Maintain clean personal vehicles
  5. Assist in cleanup after the meals route is completed
  6. Complete all reports associated with delivery of meals and any other documentation as required
  7. Clean center area, including but not limited to toilets, halls, offices, windows, sidewalks, mopping and buffing, etc.
  8. Assist in any way possible during recreational activities, such as helping call bingo, helping with arts and crafts, and other such activities suitable for participants at the center
  9. Attend staff meetings, training, and conferences as required
  10. Perform special and related duties or assignments as requested

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must be literate. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have a valid Louisiana driver’s license. Must have a good past driving record. Must be familiar with surrounding neighborhood, geography, local ordinances, etc. Must be able to relate to the needs of older persons.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or its equivalent; Experience working with the public, specifically within the elderly community is preferred. Must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license (Class D) and have an acceptable driving record.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid Louisiana Class “D” driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Should be a self-starter, highly motivated and an innovator
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills and a willingness to work with a diverse population
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with the elderly population served and co-workers

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors and within the senior center environment.
