Job summary

Cherokee Federal is seeking a licensed physician to support MEPS medical evaluations, ensuring compliance with OSHA, Privacy Act, DoD and USMEPCOM standards. The role involves thorough chart reviews, histories, physicals, and coordination with consultants and waiver authorities, onsite at the MEPS location.

The position requires passing DoD clearance, a valid state license, and current BLS. Typical hours are 6 a.m.–3 p.m., Monday–Friday, with some weekend shifts as needed.

Qualifications

  • Physician with MD/DO degree and current license in the US or DC area.
  • 3 years of graduate training in the specialty or equivalent experience.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications and DoD suitability/background checks.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure OSHA and Privacy Act compliance per DoD and USMEPCOM standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive histories and physicals; review records and interpret tests.
  • Coordinate with consultants and waiver authorities, update applicant databases.
  • Inform applicants of abnormal findings and communicate with medical staff.
  • Perform ongoing documentation and assist with other related duties as assigned.

Job description

A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens. This position requires a Common Access Card (CAC), and the ability to pass the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) clearance process to acquire a Common Access Card (CAC).

Provides comprehensive medical evaluations for MEPS applicants, ensuring full compliance with OSHA, Privacy Act, DoD, and USMEPCOM standards. Reviews medical records, conducts detailed histories and physical exams, interprets diagnostic tests, and identifies disqualifying conditions. Assesses all body systems, determines the need for additional exams, communicates abnormal findings to applicants, and updates medical staff for accurate database documentation.

Physician Responsibilities
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA and Privacy Act standards, including those set by USMEPCOM, the Department of Defense, and applicable service regulations.
  • Conducts thorough medical record reviews, histories, and physical examinations per Department of Defense standards; evaluates lab results, ensures accurate profiling, and coordinates with consultants and Service waiver authorities.
  • Evaluates diagnostic test results conducted by the MEPS medical department to identify potential disqualifying conditions.
  • Performs comprehensive in‑person medical histories for applicants who have completed the prescreening process and received authorization to proceed.
  • Assesses applicants for injuries, deformities, defects, and disorders across all body systems, including dental, psychiatric, and behavioral, and conducts a standardized orthopedic‑neurological exam.
  • Determines the need for further physical examination of identified problem areas.
  • Directly informs applicants of abnormal findings through personal consultation or written communication.
  • Conveys updates to medical staff for entry into the USMEPCOM‑specific applicant database.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Physician Experience, Education, Skills, and Abilities
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position designated as non‑sensitive and requires a personnel security investigation.
  • All health care providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • Applicants must fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • A one‑year supervisory probationary period may be required.
  • Successful completion of applicable Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS Training is required to access the MHS GENESIS System within 30 days of onboarding and/or as required.
  • Occasional shift work (before 0600 or after 1800 hours) may be required.
  • Occasional need to work Saturdays.
  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a U.S. or Canadian school with accreditation as described.
  • Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
  • After obtaining a medical degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience in a clinical setting (internship or first year of residency).
  • Applicants must also have 3 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position or equivalent experience and training.
Foreign Education

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Estimated full‑time salary range for Physician: $208,000 – $230,000.
  • Pay commensurate with experience.
  • Full‑time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided.
