Job summary

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with math-specific instructional technology tools (MyMathLab, WebAssign, Desmos, GeoGebra, Maple).

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality instruction in assigned course(s) using evidence-based and active learning strategies.
  • Develop clear, student-centered syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with course SLOs.
  • Use the Canvas LMS to manage course content, communicate with students, and post grades in a timely manner.
  • Provide accessible, structured office hours - virtual or in-person - at a minimum of one hour per credit hour taught per week.
  • Respond to student communications within 48 business hours.
  • Contribute to course and/or curriculum development and program assessment cycles as requested.
  • Monitor students' academic progress throughout the term and submit timely early alerts.
  • Proactively reach out to students who miss class and engage at-risk students.
  • Refer students to appropriate institutional support resources.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors and student success teams to support at-risk students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and student success initiatives.

Job Summary

Florida Gulf Coast University is a comprehensive university dedicated to quality education, research, and service. Assignments will include teaching at both undergraduate and/or graduate levels, as applicable. Teaching assignments may be on the main campus or at off-campus sites within our region. All faculty are expected to be excellent teachers who are responsive to the academic and developmental needs of an FGCU student population; committed to innovative, evidence-based instruction that improves student learning and completion; and active contributors to FGCU's student success culture. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor.

Job Description
Typical duties include but not limited to:
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality instruction in assigned course(s) using evidence-based and active learning strategies.
  • Develop clear, student-centered syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with course student learning outcomes (SLOs).
  • Use the Canvas LMS to manage course content, communicate with students, and post grades in a timely manner.
  • Employ math-specific instructional technologies (e.g., ALEKS, MyMathLab, WebAssign, Desmos, GeoGebra, etc.) to enhance student engagement and learning.
  • Provide accessible, structured office hours - virtual or in-person - at a minimum of one hour per credit hour taught per week.
  • Respond to student communications within 48 business hours.
  • Contribute to course and/or curriculum development and program assessment cycles as requested.
  • Monitor students' academic progress throughout the term and submit timely early alerts via WingsUp for students who show signs of academic difficulty.
  • Proactively reach out to students who miss class, fail early assessments, or disengage, using FGCU's established early alert and case management protocols.
  • Refer students to appropriate institutional support resources, including the Center for Academic Achievement (tutoring, Supplemental Instruction), Counseling & Psychological Services, and the Office of Financial Aid, as needed.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors, the First Year Experience team, and student success coaches as appropriate to support at-risk students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and student success initiatives when invited by the department chair.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
1. Teaching & Instructional Excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver clear, organized, and engaging mathematics instruction at the undergraduate level.
  • Ability to adapt instructional approaches to meet the needs of underprepared, first- generation, and diverse learners.
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn math-specific technology tools (MyMathLab, WegAssign, Desmos, GeoGebra, Maple, etc).
2. Student Success Orientation
  • Ability to identify early warning signs of student academic difficulty and respond proactively using institutional early alert tools.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn FGCU's student success ecosystem, including tutoring services, supplemental instruction, and student advising resources.
  • Commitment to student persistence and completion, particularly in high-failure-rate gateway math courses.
3. Professionalism & Collaboration
  • Promote a common purpose consistent with FGCU's stated institutional goals and demonstrate a commitment to students and the learning environment.
  • Apply effective techniques to build collaborative working relationships with colleagues, academic support staff, and students to achieve shared goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to supervision, guidance, and direction in a positive, receptive manner and in accordance with stated policies.
  • Demonstrate skills to analyze situations and processes critically and make constructive recommendations for improvement.
  • Present a professional image in word, action, and conduct.
Assessment & Continuous Improvement

Mathematics faculty are expected to participate in course-level assessment to improve student learning. This includes:

  • Assessing student performance against course-level Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and submitting results as required by the department.
  • Reviewing grade distribution and completion rate data for assigned courses and proactively identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Participating in departmental assessment cycles and program review activities as requested.
