Job summary

Northampton Community College is seeking part-time tutors for the Learning Center in Bethlehem or online. Tutors will assist students in Math disciplines from Pre-Algebra to Calculus and support Computer tutoring in C++ and MS Office, meeting on campus or online as needed.

CRLA training is provided and certification is expected within a year. This role emphasizes personalized instruction, record-keeping, and collaboration with Learning Center staff to promote student success.

Qualifications

• Thorough understanding of math; ability to tutor introductory Statistics, Physics, and MS Office is a plus.
• Proficiency in C++ programming; knowledge of HTML, basic network concepts, and data structures are pluses.

Responsibilities

• Meet with students on campus and/or online; provide personalized tutoring to improve understanding and skills.
• Attend staff meetings and ongoing professional development activities; respond promptly to communications from Learning Center staff.
• Maintain complete and accurate records of tutoring sessions and progress; participate in CRLA training and certifications within one year.

Math, Physics, or Computer Tutor - Learning Center (Bethlehem or Online)

Summary:

Part-time (approx. 10 to 25 hours per week). Math tutors help students with math disciplines from Pre-Algebra to Calculus I and above. Computer tutors help students with C++ programming and/or Intermediate MS Office. The ability to tutor multiple disciplines is desirable.

Tutors support student success by utilizing a personalized approach to help each student gain a deeper understanding of course material, devise effective learning strategies, engage in critical thinking, and acquire additional academic skills in order to help the student reach educational goals. Tutors may meet with students on an individual or small group basis on campus and/or online. Tutors are provided with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) training and are expected to obtain certification within one year of employment. Tutors are also expected to participate in staff meetings and ongoing professional development activities, promptly respond to correspondence from Learning Center staff, and maintain complete and accurate records. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Qualifications:

• Thorough understanding of math (math tutors). The ability to tutor introductory Statistics, Physics, and MS Office is a plus for math tutors.


• Proficiency in C++ programming (computer tutors). Knowledge of HTML, basic network, microcomputer OS, data structure is a plus for computer tutors.


• An Associate degree or above in the discipline or a related field from a regionally accredited institution


• A grade of B or above in each course the candidate intends to tutor


• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical skills, an interest in working with a diverse population of students, patience, and a genuine desire to help others learn and succeed


• Previous experience as a peer or professional tutor is a plus but not required
