Job summary

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking a Math Learning Assistant in Iron Mountain to support students enrolled in corequisite math courses.

The role provides in-person assistance outside and inside the classroom, working with instructors to ensure understanding and progress. You will conduct individual and small-group tutoring, tailor approaches to diverse learning needs, and help track student progress.

Qualifications

  • Competence in core math courses (e.g., MATH 107, MATH 110, MATH 140) or equivalent.
  • Strong mathematical foundation and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students and staff.
  • Prior tutoring/teaching experience preferred.
  • Commitment to supporting student retention and success.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty to help students meet learning outcomes.
  • Provide academic support for students struggling with math courses.
  • Provide individual and group tutoring and mentoring for math students.
  • Adapt tutoring approaches to varied learning needs and strategies.
  • Maintain records on student assistance, time spent, and type of help provided.

Job Summary/Basic Function

The responsibility of this temporary position is to provide assistance to students enrolled in the Math courses, with a primary focus on corequisite Math courses. This position will be providing support in and out of the classroom, as needed by students and the instructor.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competence (at least an A-) in MATH 107 (Liberal Arts Math), MATH 110 (College Algebra), or MATH 140 (Pre-Calculus) or a comparable course.
  • Completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework.
  • Strong foundation in math skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience with teaching or tutoring.
  • Candidate must be committed to student retention and success and display exceptional interpersonal and team-working skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference to candidates with experience in individual and group mentoring and tutoring at the college level.
  • Two years’ experience working at the college level.
Job Duties
  • Collaborate with faculty to help students meet learning outcomes
  • Provide academic support for students who are having difficulty meeting the learning outcomes of the math courses
  • Provide individual and group tutoring and mentoring to mathstudents
  • Recognize and respond to students according to their varyinglearning needs and use innovative strategies to assist them ingrasping and applying subject matter.
  • Maintain and provide data on students assisted, time spent, andtype of assistance provided to supervisor.
  • Serve as resource for math students who are at risk and ensure that they are provided the necessary assistance
  • Attend math courses as requested by the faculty to ensure consistency of teaching methods and learning outcomes
  • Hold office hours/open support time in the HUB
  • Any other duties as assigned
