Job summary

lamo Group is seeking a Materials Supervisor to lead hourly shop employees in a heavy production environment. You will plan, assign, and coordinate production and materials activities to meet schedules, inventory accuracy, and on-time delivery while upholding safety and quality standards.

Key qualifications include 3–5 years of industrial manufacturing experience with at least one year in supervision, knowledge of Lean methods, and familiarity with ERP/MRP systems (JD Edwards is a plus).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of practical industrial manufacturing experience, preferably in welding, assembly, machining, or material handling.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience required.
  • Experience with robotic welding and/or automated laser cutting strongly preferred.
  • Lean manufacturing environment experience highly desired.
  • Background with manufacturing methods and process improvement programs.

  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish company goals and objectives.
  • Supervise the activities of the production floor under the direction of the Sr. Supply Chain Manager.
  • Supervise material handling / kitting, and shipping and receiving activities.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate departmental activities to fulfill sales orders and production schedules.
  • Balance safety, quality, productivity, cost, and morale to achieve positive results.
  • Initiate process improvements independently and ensure they are sustained.
  • Monitor plant performance for production and quality standards.

Job description

Under general direction, the Materials Supervisor supervises hourly shop employees in a heavy production environment. Plans and assigns work, implements policies and procedures, and recommends improvements in production methods, equipment, operating procedures, working conditions and other production-related activities. Responsible for the safety of employees, quality, and efficiency of production while ensuring on-time delivery. Reports to the Sr. Supply Chain Manager.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Direct and supervise assigned production and materials employees following established procedures and approved processes. Including but not limited to performance appraisals, hiring, employee relations, attendance, and timecard maintenance, coaching and training as needed.
  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish the Company goals and objectives.
  • Supervise the activities of the production floor under the direction of the Sr. Supply Chain Manager.
  • Must be capable of supervising the activities and personnel working in material handling / kitting, and shipping and receiving.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate departmental activities to fulfill sales orders and production schedules, meet inventory accuracy requirements, and deliver manufacturing materials to the work centers in a timely manner. Flex, move, or reassign labor/employees as demands dictate.
  • Balance safety, quality, productivity, cost, and morale to achieve positive results in all areas. Work to continuously improve in all areas.
  • Ability to initiate process improvements independently without being prompted, and able to follow improvements through to ensure they are being sustained.
  • Monitor assigned plant performance for production and quality standards.
  • Determine staffing levels and manpower schedules based on workload and process flows. Control and minimize labor overtime, premium freight, and repair expenses.
  • Incorporate shop floor organization, Lean techniques, and plant cleanliness.
  • Maintain and enforce safety standards. Report any safety concerns to leadership immediately.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and material flow methodologies and principles.
  • Able to identify complex problems and review related information to develop, evaluate and implement options and solutions.
  • Able to set work schedules, by department, to ensure manpower is available to meet production schedule.
  • Strong planning skills with the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, operator’s manuals, and assembly instructions.
  • Able to use hand and power tools and perform basic measurements using tape measure, protractors, and other measuring devices, as well as operate and instruct in the use of material handling equipment.
  • Skilled and proficient with the use of personal computers; including standard office software including MSOffice. Strong understanding of ERP’s and MRP. Experience working with JD Edwards desired.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong people skills: ability to present information and interact with all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; able to solve problems, persuade, motivate, and train others.
  • Must be physically capable of standing/walking for 10+ hour shifts.
  • Must be able to work irregular and/or extended hours, including weekends as needed. Limited travel, as necessary.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field of study preferred.
  • Requires three to five years of practical industrial manufacturing experience, preferably in welding, assembly, and/or machining and fabrication, and/or material handling / material flow.
  • A minimum of one-year previous supervisory experience required.
  • Previous experience with robotic welding and/or automated laser cutting strongly preferred.
  • Previous work experience in a Lean manufacturing environment highly desired.
  • Requires background with manufacturing methods, process improvement programs and procedures and a thorough knowledge of mechanical principles.
