Materials Quality Engineer, Texas Institute for Electronics

The Texas Institute for Electronics (TIE) is a University of Texas at Austin-supported consortium focused on developing semiconductor manufacturing technology to support national security and economic growth.

Responsibilities
  • FAB Material Procurement & Vendor Engagement – develop understanding of UT material ordering processes, identify weaknesses, reduce turnaround time, maintain relationships with critical suppliers and manage Certificates of Analysis (CoA).
  • FAB Material Data Analysis and Correlation – create and maintain a structured database of vendor quality data linked to fab signals, perform SPC and data analysis to correlate material properties with process performance, support reports and dashboards.
  • Analytical Laboratory Collaboration – work with internal laboratories to conduct material characterization and contamination analysis using techniques such as ICP‑MS, VPD and other methods; establish verification protocols and IQC processes.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration – partner with Fab Engineering to forecast consumption, act as liaison between procurement, engineering and vendors, provide technical guidance, and prevent material shortages.
  • Incoming Material Quality Improvement – lead initiatives to improve vendor quality, resolve quality issues, publish performance data and define/update material specifications and acceptance criteria.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline with at least six years of related work experience.
  • Hands‑on experience in a semiconductor manufacturing fab environment.
  • Familiarity with fab departments and operational requirements.
  • Experience with fab consumables and materials.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and data analysis.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques such as ICP‑MS, VPD or similar.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. Person as defined in 22 CFR 120.62.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field and more than six years of experience.
  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple vendors and stakeholders.
  • Data‑driven problem‑solving mindset.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Working Conditions
  • Uniforms and/or protective equipment may be furnished.
  • Work may involve all weather conditions, extreme temperatures, chemical fumes, and electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Repetitive keyboard use and manual dexterity required.
  • Climbing stairs may be necessary.
