About the Role

We are looking for a Materials & Metallurgy Laboratory Technician to support the Plant Metallurgist in evaluating and improving the metallurgical aspects of thermo-mechanical production processes.

This role offers an opportunity to apply your knowledge of metallurgy, materials science, steel, heat treatment, metallography, and materials testing in a manufacturing environment. The position will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other teams to analyze materials, investigate technical issues, and support process and product qualifications.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with technical queries (TQ) and any internal feasibility analysis request (e.g. from product Engineering, from manufacturing dept), including product downgrade or re-allocation, helping to define capability and limitations from metallurgical point of view for thermo-mechanical processes.
  • Assist with defining set-up of processes that involve thermo-mechanical transformations from the metallurgical aspect.
  • Support qualifications from the metallurgical point of view of new or modified: thermo-mechanical processes, steel and/or steel suppliers and/or products.
  • Follow and implement Failure Analysis protocols for the analysis of internal problems or external claims.
  • Monitors performance of thermo-mechanical processes, (e.g., heat treatment reprocessing); analyzing quality indicators to identify process performance and/or product quality.
  • Interprets test results and microstructures, and correlates them with material properties and processing history. Experience with SEM/EDS analysis is a plus.
  • Analyzes test results, ensuring compliance with specifications, with a focus on steels and their heat treatment.
  • Assists in identifying and resolving technical issues related to testing or specimen quality.
  • Support the application and development of safety standards and comply with company policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related Engineering field.
Required Skills
  • Strong foundation in metallurgy, particularly steel metallurgy.
  • Understanding of structure-property relationships in steels.
  • Knowledge of steel heat treatment processes and their impact on material properties.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret and apply manufacturing and quality specifications, such as ISO 9001 and API 5CT.
  • Knowledge or experience with metallographic sample preparation and optical microscopy, including SEM/EDS experience.
Preferred Skills
  • Hands-on experience or academic/laboratory exposure to metallurgical or materials testing.
  • Experience or academic exposure to manufacturing and/or heat treatment processes.
  • Familiarity with steel processing, microstructures, and structure-property relationships.
