Materials Handler

Position Summary

The Materials Handler is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient handling and movement of materials throughout the manufacturing plant to support daily production operations. This role ensures timely material flow, proper inventory control, and effective coordination between warehouse, production, and logistics teams.

This position performs hands‑on warehouse duties, including operating stand‑up and sit‑down forklifts, unloading and storing materials, staging and loading shipments, delivering materials to manufacturing areas, and returning unused materials to inventory. The Materials Handler also performs cycle counts, safely handles and stores chemicals, and maintains organized and accurate warehouse locations.

The Materials Handler plays a key role in maintaining a safe, clean, and productive work environment by following all safety procedures, housekeeping standards, and productivity expectations. Through collaboration with plant personnel and attention to detail, this role supports efficient plant operations and overall company success.

Essential Functions
  • Operate stand‑up and sit‑down forklifts to unload, store, stage, ship, and move materials through the facility.
  • Deliver materials to manufacturing areas and return unused materials to the warehouse.
  • Wrap pallets for storage and shipment.
  • Gather pallets and load trailers for outbound shipments.
  • Deliver incoming MRO items to requisitioners.
  • Handle and safely store chemicals, including up to 50‑gallon containers.
  • Empty dumpsters and maintain low waste levels around the plant.
  • Maintain clean aisles, stairwells, and work areas; operate floor scrubbers as required.
  • Maintain clean and safe warehouse operations.
  • Follow all safety procedures and work safely in hazardous and high‑temperature environments.
  • Meet productivity expectations under time constraints.
  • Work collaboratively with production and management.
Education
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience accepted in lieu of education
  • Valid Driver’s License
Experience
  • 2+ years experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating material‑handling equipment, including stand‑up and sit‑down forklifts in an industrial setting; 2+ years preferred.
  • Experience unloading, storing, staging, and shipping materials.
  • Experience performing inventory cycle counts and maintaining material accuracy.
  • Experience handling and safely storing chemicals and regulated materials.
  • Understanding of production processes preferred.
  • Lean manufacturing and/or 5S experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and warehouse safety standards preferred.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing documentation, work orders, and material specifications.
Language Skills
  • Must be able to read/write/communicate in English.
  • Computer Skills
  • Basic experience in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to learn and use warehouse management systems and inventory software; experience using ERP/MRP or inventory management systems preferred.
  • Dependable, self‑motivated, and able to work under time constraints.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet productivity goals in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to assist in other areas as needed and perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Demonstrated accountability for safety practices and adherence to OSHA standards (OSHA 10 preferred)

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 30 lbs. consistently.
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to walk/stand/bend/stoop/kneel/reach and perform repetitive motions consistently throughout the shift.
  • Ability to visually perform detailed inspections of product quality and machine performance.
  • Ability to audibly detect machine performance.
  • Glass manufacturing operations facility.
  • Can be exposed to elevated temperatures during certain seasons.
  • Walking and working surfaces may include concrete floors, grated platforms, stairs, and diamond plate floor coverings in designated areas.
  • Must safely navigate manufacturing equipment, pedestrian aisles, pallet jacks, forklifts, and other powered industrial traffic while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • May occasionally be required to work outside normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays, to support operational needs, emergencies, customer requirements, or production schedules.
