Job summary

SpaceX is seeking a Materials Engineer (Starship) to lead material selection and performance from design through flight. You will work on high‑performance metals, develop material properties, and conduct root-cause analyses to ensure reliability in flight hardware and manufacturing.

You should bring a BS in materials science or engineering with 2+ years in metallics; advanced degrees preferred. Willingness to travel and extend hours as needed is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in materials science or engineering.
• 2+ years of professional, research, and/or internship experience in metallics.

Responsibilities

• Own outcomes of critical materials to the program.
• Oversee material scope from inception to flight.
• Develop properties for materials (physical, mechanical, thermal).
• Perform root cause investigations using fractography and testing.
• Develop and implement reliability improvements in designs and manufacturing.
• Collaborate with flight hardware engineers to ensure proper material use.
• Work with engineers and technicians to solve complex material challenges.
