Job summary

Dahl Consulting is seeking a Materials Engineer to join a state-of-the-art product development center in Wyoming, MN. This hands-on role supports materials testing, validation, and analysis across a diverse portfolio of powersports products.

You will perform sample preparation, testing, data analysis, and reporting, collaborating with engineering teams to drive material performance objectives. A bachelor’s in a related field and practical lab experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Metallurgical Engineering.
• Knowledge of materials testing methodologies.
• Experience with metallurgical sample preparation techniques.
• Experience using microscopes and hardness testing equipment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of chemical handling procedures and lab safety.

Responsibilities

This is a hands‑on laboratory position responsible for sample preparation, materials testing, data analysis, and technical reporting. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple projects in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Job Description

As a Materials Engineer, you will support materials testing and validation activities using a variety of laboratory equipment and testing methods. You will work with metals, plastics, coatings, and other materials to evaluate performance, investigate failures, and provide data-driven recommendations to engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Perform metallurgical sample preparation and evaluation.
• Conduct failure analysis and fractography investigations.
• Utilize optical microscopy and digital imaging equipment to analyze materials.
• Execute accelerated environmental testing and validation activities.
• Perform coating performance evaluations and testing.
• Analyze test results and prepare clear, concise technical reports with data-based conclusions.
• Manage testing schedules across multiple laboratory resources and communicate project status to stakeholders.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and implement lean practices to improve laboratory efficiency and throughput.
• Operate, maintain, and organize laboratory equipment and workspaces.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to support product development and material performance objectives.

Work Environment

• Majority of work is performed in a materials laboratory and office setting.
• Position requires extended periods of sitting and standing.
• Hands‑on laboratory work with testing equipment, chemicals, and material samples is a regular part of the role.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
• Knowledge of materials testing methodologies and engineering fundamentals.
• Experience with metallurgical sample preparation techniques.
• Experience using microscopes and hardness testing equipment.
• Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and manage competing deadlines.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work independently and demonstrate self-motivation.
• Knowledge of chemical handling procedures and laboratory safety practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working in a materials testing or engineering laboratory.
• Experience conducting failure analysis and fractography on metal and/or plastic components.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, and welding.
• Experience performing environmental, chemical, or coating validation testing.
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement principles.
• Strong desire to learn and expand technical capabilities in a growing engineering environment.
